“Dear brother,
It’s me, your stubborn sister who keeps on following you. I am writing a letter to you since you are my last family. And I am happy to have at least you by my side. Remember the first day when we saw each other? I was so captivated by your handsomeness. I thought I saw a prince. Your smiles, your shy approach and your kind attitude, they reached my heart. And maybe, that is the first time I fell in love with you. I kept this a secret for a long time, but it overflowed in a way I couldn’t control it anymore.
Mistakes after mistakes.
I learned that all my life, I dedicated it to you. I regretted my actions, even the words that I didn’t mean. I am sorry for wishing that. Believe me, I didn’t want our parents to die. Just like you, I was in deep pain too. But in the end, I haven’t learned. I keep on reaching for the affection that you couldn’t give. I was selfish and I hurt many people around me.
I am sorry.
I should have listened to you.
But, it’s too late.
I lost my friend who unconditionally stayed by my side. And… I lost your trust.
In the end, the only thing left to me is to leave. And that is what I will do.
Goodbye, brother. I hope you’ll have a great life.”
“A great life after you died?” Geoffrey asked after reading Isa’s last will.
Then, he tended his head to the lady sleeping on the hospital bed.
Wanting to take her own life, Isa drank too many sleeping pills with intentional suicide attempt.
Taking too many sleeping pills at once can cause a deadly overdose. Thankfully, Geoffrey immediately seek medical help before it is too late. Isa is now in safe condition even though drug overdoes can cause brain damage of physical injury that can leave a person dealing with painful side effects for hours or indefinitely.
Looking at Isa, Geoffrey blamed himself. He should have used another way to discipline her.
‘Maybe, moving away and being a coward is the cause of her obsession,’ Geoffrey thought.
He grabbed his phone and dialed a number.
Geoffrey knew that the solution lay upon him.
“Hey. Where are you? Can we adjust the date of our talk? I want it now,” he said to Chadwick over the phone call.
Geoffrey left Isa and asked the guards to look over her while he’s gone. Then, he met with Chadwick inside a cafe.
They sat across to each other with warm coffees on the table.
“Why did you suddenly change the day? I thought you’ll be busy this week?” Chadwick inquired.
Geoffrey held his cup and took a sip first. As he placed the cup down, his eyes went back to him.
“I never thought that you befriended me just because of Isa,” Geoffrey said.
Chadwick gaped at the man who dropped a bomb all of a sudden. Their friendship collapsed the day Geoffrey told him that Chadwick only went to his side to get his stepsister, which wasn’t true. Since then, they hadn’t gotten the time to fix their misunderstanding. They went farther from each other and resented a lot in the past.
“Chadwick you… You were a great friend to me,” Geoffrey added. “I just found out that you have feelings for Isa so I decided to stay away. Because I don’t want you to get hurt.”
Strength entered his hands, which were neatly placed on his lap.
‘You were a great friend.’
They are words that he wished to hear for a long time.
Actually, Chadwick knew that Geoffrey was only lying. He can tell that they were real friends and that Geoffrey avoided them on purpose to give way. Yet, he despised him. He hated him so much, but deep inside, all he wanted to hear was these.
“I am sorry for choosing the cowardly way. I should have fixed this instead of running,” Geoffrey added, smiling at his old pal.
Chadwick’s throat thickened as his eyes glinted with mixed sadness and relief.
“In short, you are asking me to be your friend again, right?” Chadwick asked, grinning as he crossed his arms and lifted his chin in triumph.
Dumbfounded, Geoffrey laughed at him. Chadwick is still the confident, arrogant but sweet pal in the past.
“I came here to fix our misunderstanding. But it will be hard to befriend a man who married Adira and hurt her,” Geoffrey replied. “In my eyes, you are still a bastard.”
“Same goes to me,” Chadwick murmured. “A playboy who dated a lot. You gave me that image and I also see you as a freak.”
They looked at each other and then chuckled together.
Yes.
It will be hard to stay friends with a competitor in love.
They both picked up their cups and took sips. When they placed the cups back on the table, Chadwick’s voice has returned.
“How’s Isa?”
Geoffrey flinched.
He doesn’t want to tell him that she attempted suicide. Because just like him, Chadwick might blame himself. It is not about lying but keeping the peace to everyone.
“Isa is sick, so we brought her to the hospital,” Geoffrey said.
Chadwick’s eyes widened. “S-Sick? Badly sick?”
Geoffrey took a deep breath and said, “The doctor said that she will recover soon.”
Chadwick sighed in relief. “That’s great.”
“Do you want to visit her?”
A faint smile appeared on Chadwick’s lips before he shook his head. “No. Actually the last night of the vacation, I ended my friendship to Isa.”
Geoffrey looked down and recalled the content of the letter. He read that Isa had lost her friend, and basically, she was talking about Chadwick.
“I promised that night that my life, my attention, I will give them all to Adira. I don’t want to do the same mistake again.”
At his answer, Geoffrey couldn’t stop the grin on his lips.
‘At least, he became a better person,’ Geoffrey thought.
He was so happy to see Chadwick finally taking a step forward.
“You really love Adira,” Geoffrey murmured.
“So, can you leave us alone and back out?”
“No,” Geoffrey said raising his eyes. “We have to fight until the end.”
“Why?” Chadwick complained. “If you can just leave alone everything will be smooth between me and my wife.”
“Ex-wife,” Geoffrey highlighted.
“Sorry, but we still have five months to pretend as marriage couple.”
“But you are divorced already.”
“So what? We love each other.”
“Who says Adira loves you?”
“She will! Can’t you see the look in her eyes whenever she’s looking at me?”
“I saw it. She is looking at you as if you are a bother.”
“What? T-Then, if I am a bother, what about you?”
Geoffrey rubbed his chin and answered, “She looks at me as if… I am the most handsome guy. Yeah.”
Chadwick caressed the goosebumps on his skin. “You really changed.”
“I will take that as a compliment.”
“Anyway! Adira won’t like you!” Chadwick shouted.
“So much confident from the ex-husband.”
Chadwick quickly covered Geoffrey’s mouth with a napkin he already used to wipe his lips before.
“Hmp!”
“Lower your voice. That is still a secret,” Chadwick hushed him while looking around.
Geoffrey pulled his hand down and glared. “What the hell are you doing? Putting that disgusting thing to my lips. You have a death wish?”
“Ohh, right. This is a napkin that I used. Blah! I also didn’t wish to have an indirect kiss with you!”
“That’s more disgusting, get away from me.”
Their conversation ended with bickering. But at the end of the night, they separated with a smile on their lips and determined mind.
No one will back down until the end of the fight.
