Tremaine knew Sheldon's speculation was probable.
However, he instinctively got worried hearing Yesseca had gone to the hospital.
"Get to the hospital. Call me as soon as you find out what happened."
Tremaine wanted to go himself but suppressed the urge in the end.
He worried he would run into Yesseca there.
At the same time, the doctor came out of the surgical suite.
He told everyone the bad news.
It was very likely Celine wouldn't survive.
"We've tried our best." The doctor said with distress, "Although the patient had only been beaten very briefly, she suffered an injury on her head. We're unable to remove the blood clot in her brain at our current level. We're terribly sorry."
The news came as a bolt in the blue to the Fernandez.
Calter pleaded, "Doctor, please save my wife. Do something. We had a neighbor who suffered an injury to the head and survived. Please, there must be a way."
The doctor said, "Our medical knowledge and skills can only do so much. Please make the necessary preparations."
"Slap!"
Suddenly, a crisp slap rang out.
Calter gave Preslie a harsh slap in the face.
He shouted at the top of his lungs, "You ungrateful girl, this is all your fault!"
Amelia took the chance to do the same as well. "Preslie! You good-for-nothing! You've killed your own mother! You're worse than a monster!"
Preslie had already lost the ability to react when she heard the news, standing there in a daze. She didn't even respond to both the slaps.
Seeing Calter was going to make another strike, Yesseca stood in front of Preslie and said, "It was my fault. Hit me, not her!"
Calter pointed at Yesseca. "You think I wouldn't dare?! It's thanks to you my wife is dead!"
With that, Calter was about to give her a good beating when Amelia pulled him back.
Despite her sadness, Amelia didn't forget to scheme. "Dad, beating them up won't save Mom.
Come with me; I have something to tell you."
Amelia had always been his favorite child, so he naturally listened.
After pulling Calter aside, Amelia whispered, "We can only make the preparations now that nothing can save Mom. Beating them up won't do anything for Mom, but we can take this opportunity to ask for compensation. Since they're the reason Mom's dead, they have to give us their shop."
Amelia was sad that her mother was gone, but at the same time, she had thought of something for the long-term.
She long had her eyes on the patisserie.
This was the best time to snatch their shop.
Calter said with a lump in his throat, "Amelia, I'm really not in the mood to talk about this right with how your mother is right now. She's on death's door!"
Amelia also got teary-eyed at that.
She said, "Dad, I'm also sad about Mom's passing, but we have to think in the long run. She ended up like this because of those shares. If we can get a slice of the cake, Mom would be able to leave in peace, wouldn't she?"
Her words tempted Calter.
While Calter and Amelia were scheming up a plan to get the shares, Preslie sat dazedly on a bench, looking like a lifeless doll.
Yesseca comforted Preslie awhile before an idea struck her.
She went to the doctor to confirm if Celine really couldn't survive.
"Our hospital isn't equipped to rescue the patient," the doctor replied, "Although the patient is unconscious, her vitals are stable. However, she'll only be able to carry on for a few more hours. You can accompany the patient and see her one last time."
Yesseca got the point from the doctor's explanation.
