“I know you’re younger. That’s why I never held it against you. But she’s the one who broke the law, and she needs to face the consequences!”
“Natalie, can you really be so heartless? She’s our mother!”
“You’re mistaken. She’s not our mother. She’s your mother. I have work to do. Please leave, or I’ll call security.”
“Natalie, are you really going to be this cruel?”
“Cruel? Why should I have feelings for a criminal?”
Natalie stared coldly at Fiona. What kind of feelings was she supposed to have for a criminal?
She was just a newborn. She hadn’t done anything to anyone. But just because Kate couldn’t bear to see her own child, Marie, suffer, she switched them, plunging Natalie into a life of hardship and injustice.
“Natalie, the night Marie was born, Dad lost a lot of money gambling. He was convinced Marie was a curse who made him lose everything, so he was going to get rid of her for good. Mom couldn’t bear to see her child killed. You’re a mother now, surely you can understand her desperation and what she was going through. Besides, she wasn’t bad to you all these years.”
Natalie just looked at Fiona. “Are you listening to yourself? Why should I have had to take the fall for Marie? Why am I expected to understand the mindset of a criminal?”
“After all these years, don’t you have any feelings for her?”
“You should be asking your mother that question. After all the years we spent together, did she have any feelings for me? When it came down to a choice between me and her biological daughter, she still chose Marie, condemning me to this miserable life for over twenty years. And she didn’t choose me then, either. She kept slandering me to try and stop me from reuniting with my real parents, still afraid that Marie would suffer. It was the same twenty years ago, and it’s the same now. The years we spent together didn’t change a thing. So why should I empathize with a criminal?”
