Fiona had always admired Mr. Mercer, but she had only ever seen him on television. Now, seeing him in person, her heart couldn't help but race.
“Mr. Mercer, everyone knows you’re a man of integrity. Why are you being so harsh with me?”
“I won’t tolerate anyone who harms Natalie.”
Fiona explained frantically, “No, that's not it. I didn’t want to cause trouble for Natalie. I just wanted to beg her to see my mother. A case has been filed against my mom, and she’ll be sentenced soon. She just wants to see my sister one last time before she goes to prison. Is that too much to ask? Mr. Mercer, I’m begging you. Please help me. Help me convince Natalie to see our mother.”
Fiona put on a pitiful act, her eyes welling up as she looked at Mr. Mercer. Tears streamed down her face, making her look utterly wretched.
Her words were carefully chosen to paint Natalie as a cold and heartless person. More than anything, she hoped to earn Mr. Mercer's sympathy. Surely a crying woman would awaken a man's protective instincts.
But to her surprise, Mr. Mercer responded coldly, “I’m sorry, but we don't empathize with criminals. A person isn’t defined by their parents’ crimes, but by their own choices. If they choose to act like monsters, they lose the right to basic sympathy.”
Fiona was stunned. She never expected Mr. Mercer to say something like that to her. She couldn’t believe he would belittle her just to defend Natalie.
“Mr. Mercer, I’m your fan! I’ve admired you for years. I know you’ve always been a gentle and elegant person. How can you say something like that now?”
“I am an academic, not an idol. I don’t need fans. Please, do not disturb Natalie again. Security, please escort her out.”
As the security guards took hold of her, Fiona cried out, “Natalie, I know you’re a Ward now and way above me, but can’t you remember all the years we spent growing up together? Please don’t do this to me!”
Fiona was dragged out. Natalie maintained a stoic expression the entire time, determined not to let anyone see her emotions or her sorrow.
