Simon opened his mouth to reply, but Maeve's voice suddenly crackled through the speakers. "Just to be clear, if he lives for exactly seven more days, I pass?"
Audrey crossed her arms. "That's right. Seven days. That's your one and only win condition."
Maeve gave a curt nod. "Done. I accept."
Not only did Audrey look stunned, but up in the executive suite, Simon and Connor exchanged shocked glances. Neither of them had expected her to agree so quickly.
"Does she genuinely not understand how dead this guy is?" Connor asked the screen.
With massive organ failure and cancer ravaging the man's body, he had hours left. Where was she getting this reckless confidence?
The shock faded, replaced by a slow, hungry smile on Simon's lips. "That's my girl. I love a woman with a backbone." If Maeve had backed down, he would have been profoundly disappointed.
Down in the sterile isolation unit of Sub-Level 4, Maeve cut straight to business. "When can I start the treatments?"
"As soon as you sign the liability forms," Audrey replied.
Maeve raised an eyebrow. "Forms?"
"Of course."
Audrey handed over the pre-drafted paperwork. The terms were straightforward. During the seven-day window, Maeve had full clearance for Sub-Level 4, provided she followed protocol. Absolutely no unauthorized guests, and strict confidentiality regarding everything she saw.
Sub-Level 4 was a highly classified human testing facility holding dozens of desperate patients who had signed away their lives. It was a legal minefield. If Maeve leaked a single detail, Lab C would sue her into oblivion.
Scanning the document in seconds, Maeve ruthlessly slashed her signature across the dotted line.
The second the clipboard left her hands, Maeve pulled a pre-loaded syringe from her pocket and plunged it straight into Subject 1152's arm.
Audrey lunged forward, but she was too late. "What the hell did you just pump into him?!" she shrieked.
