After everything Troy had done to her, Ayla was certain that she could not go through another heartbreak.
Maybe it was instinct. Maybe it was her mind trying to protect her from another disaster. Whatever the reason, she had listened to her heart and ended things with Draven.
But the truth was simple. She had truly liked him. Breaking up had hurt more than she wanted to admit, which was why she avoided thinking about it too much.
But Troy had brought it up. He had hit the one place that hurt the most.
The video on her phone kept playing.
It had looped three times. By now, Troy must have seen everything clearly.
Max had once sent her that video, but he deleted it almost right away. Ayla had not saved it in time.
Back when the twins were born overseas, Max often helped take care of them. One night, while he was up late watching little Fluffy, he casually asked if she had ever thought about getting back together with Troy.
Ayla mentioned the video and asked him to send it again.
She never thought it would come in handy today.
If she had not reminded Troy, he might have kept pretending to be the loving, devoted man forever.
But the video also forced Ayla to face a part of her past she would rather forget.
She made a promise to herself. She would never allow herself to fall into that miserable state again.
She would never remarry Troy.
And she would never let her heart be broken into pieces again.
That was enough.
If she could make herself strong enough, nothing would be able to hurt her anymore.
Living on her own and staying strong was not such a bad life.
Ayla put her phone away and wiped the tears from her face. Then she walked to the crib in the inner room.
She reached out and lightly poked Birdie's soft cheek. Her baby girl waved her tiny hands and grabbed Ayla's finger.
The warmth of that small hand struck straight at Ayla's heart.
Tears slipped down her cheeks again.
A moment later, a pair of arms wrapped around her from behind.
Troy held her tightly, burying his face against her neck. He kept crying and apologizing again and again. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry..."
