After the twins were born, Ayla stayed overseas for ten days. Max was there the whole time. He was great with babies-patient and careful. Honestly, he handled them better than their father. Halle was busy cleaning up Edgar’s mess, so Max helped a lot. He eased much of Ayla’s stress. At night, Ayla often woke in panic, afraid the babies had stopped breathing. When Max noticed this, he took the late-night shift. He stayed up and watched the babies so she could rest.

Ayla had known Max before, but they were never close. Because of Troy, they had always kept their distance.

But those ten days changed things. They got along better after that.

When Ayla returned home, Max still came by to visit the twins. Over time, they slowly became friends.

Ayla didn’t want anything to do with Troy, but some social ties were hard to avoid. Once she got used to Max, things felt natural. If they ran into each other and he invited her to dinner, she wouldn’t refuse.

Max cared about details. The place he chose was a high-end restaurant.

He had clearly booked it ahead of time. When Ayla arrived, the table was already full of food.

She had been hungry all day. So she stopped pretending to be polite and simply ate. Quietly.

Max didn’t talk much either. He just ate with her. His manners were elegant and effortless. In his younger days, he had changed girlfriends almost daily. Charm came naturally to him. Every move looked smooth and attractive.

Ayla ate until she was about 80% full.

Then the restaurant manager walked over, pushing a small cart. A bouquet of flowers sat on top. The manager placed the roses gently on the table.

Ayla looked at the flowers. Then she looked at Max. He was staring at her with a deep, affectionate look.

She froze. Only then did she notice something.

Max was dressed far more formally than usual. Even his usual flirty smile was gone.

Everything about him looked serious tonight.

At that moment, Ayla understood why he had invited her.

To be honest, she was shocked.

During the time they had known each other, Max had always felt like a good friend. He was funny, calm, and easy to talk to. He knew how to make people feel comfortable. That was probably why they got along so well. But she had never once felt that he liked her that way.

Then something suddenly came back to her. The day she confessed to Draven and they started dating, Max had called her.

He told her Troy had a fever and asked her to go check on him. Of course, she refused.

But Max had seemed strangely curious about her relationship with Draven. He asked several questions. At the time, Ayla had already felt something was a little off.

They barely knew each other. They had only spoken a few times. And Max was Troy’s best friend. Why would he care so much about Troy’s ex-wife starting a new relationship?

Ayla felt a small flash of suspicion. Then she pushed it away. She thought she was overthinking. Max had never said anything clearly.

In Ayla’s life, Max had always been easy to overlook. She was busy with work and her life. Before long, she had forgotten Troy and that small moment completely. Only now did she remember it.

Seeing how serious Max looked today, Ayla realized her instinct back then had not been wrong.

But it still felt strange.

Max liked her?

Ayla had been beautiful since she was young. She never lacked admirers. Still, few men had the courage to confess to her directly. Maybe she was not the soft, sweet type most boys liked. But Ayla had never doubted her charm.

The real issue was her situation. Max liking her simply didn’t make sense.

He and Troy had grown up together. Their friendship was strong.
