Ayla ignored the hidden meaning in his words. She thought for a moment, then answered his earlier question. "When would I date again?" she said. "Maybe when I suddenly feel like it. Maybe when I want someone around. Or maybe when I happen to meet the right person."
She paused. "As for the kind of man I'd choose... first, I have to like looking at him. Second, he has to be easygoing. No drama. No trouble. He shouldn't cause problems for me. He should be sensible and easy to deal with. Basically the same things men usually expect from women."
By any normal standard, Ayla was already very successful. She owned a fast-growing tech company and a thriving media business. With her talent, connections, and money, she already held plenty of power. She didn't need to please anyone. If anything, many people hoped to benefit from her success.
So when it came to choosing a man, Ayla could simply follow her feelings. It was that simple.
Max suddenly asked, "Don't you think I fit those requirements?"
Ayla blinked in surprise.
Max continued calmly. "I can keep you company. You already know whether I can handle a casual relationship. We're both independent. I won't cause you trouble." He shrugged lightly. "I'm single. No family obligations. No kids. I'm free whenever you call. And while a man shouldn't be narcissistic, objectively speaking, my looks and my build are good enough to be a movie star."
Then he met her eyes. "Ayla, our personalities work well together. Let's give it a try."
Hearing him speak like he was applying for a job made Ayla laugh. "Mr. Bennett, you don't have to go this far."
But Max was serious. "I expected you to reject me," he said. "But I'm not like Troy. I can't chase someone endlessly. If you turn me down three or five times, I'll probably give up."
He leaned forward a little. "So if the chances of us truly being together are small, then I'd rather leave a strong impression in your life. I don't want to be invisible. I want to be someone important. I want you to remember me. You might think you're using me. But honestly, I'd enjoy it too."
Max shrugged. "When it comes to relationships, I'm pretty relaxed. Otherwise, with all the casual flings I've had at parties over the years, my conscience would have tortured me a long time ago."
Then he reached out and gently took Ayla's hand. Hope filled his eyes. "Ayla, you can leave anytime. If you need me, just call. I'm willing to be the man you turn to when you want company." He looked at her seriously. "Just give me a chance."
Ayla was quiet for two seconds. Then she said, "Alright. Let's try."
Max froze. His hand tightened around hers without him noticing. "Really?"
Ayla nodded. "Yes."
Max had made things very clear, so Ayla felt no pressure. Trying things with him was simple. She only wanted to see when she could truly forget Draven.
Breakups take time. Three months had already passed. The worst part was over. Ayla had buried Draven deep in her heart, but forgetting him completely would still take longer.
Since they could never be together, she chose to shift her focus. Maybe that would help her move on faster.
