Ayla had never paid much attention to Max before. Now she couldn’t help looking at him more carefully.
After all, he was her boyfriend now. Well, a boyfriend she could break up with anytime.
Max was handsome. Tall, fit, and confident. His family was also one of the most powerful in Trensea. On paper, he was almost perfect.
Meeting Troy had made Ayla doubt her own judgment. But that didn’t mean her taste in men was bad. Getting together with Max was a sudden choice. She only wanted to forget her last relationship faster. She wanted the bitterness in her heart to fade so she could start fresh.
Her last boyfriend had been outstanding. So even a temporary boyfriend couldn’t be too ordinary.
If she picked some random guy, it would only make Draven look even better. That would defeat the whole point.
Luckily, Max was nearly flawless.
His confession had also come at the right time. The twins had helped them build trust. They had grown comfortable around each other. And it had already been over three months-almost four-since her breakup. The first two weeks had been the hardest for Ayla. After that, she slowly saw that Draven was moving on too.
So, she had to move forward as well. If Max had confessed a month earlier, she would have refused. Now, though, the timing felt right.
There was no love between them. Only physical attraction.
And Max was undeniably handsome. If he looked ordinary-or if their personalities clashed-Ayla would never have made such a sudden decision.
‘Come closer,” Ayla said.
Max lifted an eyebrow. His eyes sparkled with amusement. When he smiled, even the young girls that work in the flower shop ooked stunned. They kept sneaking glances at him.
Max stepped closer.
Ayla leaned in and lightly brushed her lips against his.
t wasn’t like the deep kiss he had given her earlier. This one lasted barely a second. Just a gentle, polite touch.
Max noticed the way she was looking at him. He knew his looks had earned him some points. That little kiss was her reward.
And he liked that reward very much.
He kept smiling. He almost laughed out loud.
Max tightened his hold on her hand. “Come on,” he said. “I’ll walk you back.”
They headed toward the hotel together.
As they walked, Max said, “Feels like I just won the lottery. The money doesn’t matter. Winning itself feels great.”

“You are so happy?” Ayla asked. She couldn’t quite share his excitement. Still, having someone cheerful beside her lifted her mood. Being with Max felt easy and relaxed.
“Of course,” Max said honestly. Streetlights flickered across his handsome face as they walked. “Being with the person I like makes me happy.”
Ayla and Max walked side by side. “Ayla,” Max said, “I used to think I was lucky I never treated you badly. At least we stayed on good. terms. After you and Troy divorced, we could still talk.” He smiled. “Looks like being a decent guy finally paid off. Maybe the universe really does keep score.”
Ayla didn’t respond. Among Troy’s friends, Max was the only one who had never mocked her to her face. As for what he might have said behind her back, maybe he had. Sometimes people did that just to fit in.
“People who do bad things will get punished eventually,” Ayla said.
Max understood what she meant.
Troy now had children, and everything seemed to go his way. Life was treating him far too well.
“I waited a long time for my reward,” Max said. “Maybe if we wait long enough, the bad guys will get what they deserve too.”
