She had originally thought that doing business with Evan would be a relatively easy and profitable arrangement.
But as it turned out, Emma had been far too optimistic.
It had only been half a month since she received the fifty million dollars, and Emma had already gotten her first message from Evan, her first "assignment."
[Evan: There's a private dinner tonight that I need you to attend. What's your address? I'll have Jason drop off a dress for you.]
When she saw the message, Emma had just finished a new round of chemotherapy. She was lying on the bed, in too much pain to even sit up.
The message hit her like a bolt of lightning. But she quickly recovered and typed back a reply.
[Emma: I'm not free today. Maybe next time.]
Next time?
Not a chance.
Of course, Evan wouldn't agree. His immediate reaction was that she was just making an excuse. He replied swiftly.
[Evan: Don't forget our agreement. If you breach the contract, I can sue to get the fifty million back.]
Unbelievable.
Seeing the words "get the fifty million back," Emma finally understood what it felt like to be hit with a one-two punch to both her body and soul.
[Emma: When? Where? No need to send a dress, just wire me the money. I'll buy my own.]
"Tch, 'You'll find out tonight,'" Daniel mimicked Evan's tone before grumbling, "I don't know what kind of game you're playing, being all mysterious. It's so boring!"
With that, as if he knew Evan wouldn't say anything more, Daniel stood up and left the office without a backward glance.
Meanwhile, on the other side of town.
Seeing the two hundred thousand dollars deposited into her account, Emma finally let out a genuine smile, sucking in a sharp breath.
It had taken her nearly thirty years to finally understand the truth she'd heard as a child: "Nothing is real except money!"
Kelly brought a warm, damp towel and gently placed it on Emma's lower back where the chemo had hit her hardest. "How are you feeling, Ms. Xu? Is it still really bad? Should I call Mr. Allen?"
Call Nathan? Over her dead body.
