Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 271

He didn't answer her call. He didn't ask what was wrong. There was only a single, brief text: "I'm in a meeting."

Melissa found it laughable. She didn't consider herself someone who liked to bother others. Since getting together with Evan, she had always done everything she could on her own, making sure never to trouble him. It was because of their unequal status, because she knew she already owed him so much, that Melissa was always careful not to cause him any problems.

But why? Now, when she needed him most, all he could say was that he was in a meeting? Not even a hint of concern or a single question?

Emma finished her chemotherapy for the day and, after getting her test results, went straight to the elevators to go home.

While waiting, she happened to glance aside and saw a girl huddled in the corner, clutching her phone, looking utterly devastated.

Melissa was crouched down, staring at her phone with an expression of complete disbelief. She looked pale, and her whole body was trembling. Emma didn't know what had happened, but seeing her state, she guessed something terrible must have occurred.

But she only gave a fleeting glance before looking away. While she didn't hate Melissa, it didn't mean she could comfort her without any reservations in a situation like this.

The elevator numbers climbed steadily until they stopped at "15." With a soft chime, the doors opened, and Emma walked in, holding her bag with composure.

She began to question her old self and started to get used to the idea that a bag could cost seventy or eighty thousand, or even three to five hundred thousand dollars.

But despite getting used to it, she never directly accepted the bags Evan had sent over. Perhaps it was out of timidity or low self-esteem that she felt she didn't deserve to carry such an expensive bag or wear jewelry worth hundreds of thousands.

Even when Evan offered to buy her a car, she initially refused. It was only after he repeatedly suggested it would be convenient for getting around that she finally went with him to a dealership. There, amidst a sea of luxury cars, she picked the most modest-looking and least expensive one: a BMW MINI.

On the day she picked the car, Evan didn't look pleased, and the top salesperson wore an awkward smile. But Melissa didn't understand why Evan was upset. She even felt she had done the right thing, proving once again that she wasn't with him for his money.
