Nathan returned to his desk, his expression back to normal.
He seemed completely unfazed by the long, silent stare they had just shared.
Emma's face burned, and her heart pounded in her chest.
She clutched the warm paper cup, glancing at him once before lowering her eyes again.
Why is it so hot in here?
The spot on her lower back from the bone marrow aspiration didn't seem to ache as much anymore, just a faint, lingering pain.
Emma's brow furrowed as her mind raced. Suddenly—
"Do you have a fever?"
The man stood up and walked toward her again. Then, the back of his large, warm hand was pressed against her forehead.
He was so close she could see the fabric of his crisp, white shirt. All she could smell was the sharp scent of antiseptic, mixed with something distinctly masculine.
Her breath hitched. The air in the room suddenly felt thick and stifling.
"No, I'm fine!"
She shot to her feet, unable to sit any longer.
"I'm fine! I-I don't have a fever!"
Great, now she was stammering.
Emma swallowed hard, looking at Nathan with a mixture of nervousness and caution.
However, his attention was focused on her flushed cheeks. "Fever can be a side effect of the procedure. I'll get a thermometer so we can check."
