Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 283

She slept soundly through the night, not a single dream disturbing her rest.

When she got up in the morning, she realized the rain from the night before had caused the temperature outside to drop a few more degrees.

Her mother had already made breakfast by the time she left her room.

Seeing her, Karen Hayes immediately called out, “Hurry and wash up. Come have some sweet pastries.”

“Pastries?”

Emma was a little surprised to hear what was for breakfast. “Mom, what’s the occasion?”

“What do you think!”

Karen placed two bowls on the table. “It’s a holiday today! Of course, we have to celebrate. You, my child, have been so busy you’ve lost track of time…”

Her mother’s words jogged her memory. She suddenly remembered it was a special day. Time was flying by; the month was already half over.

“You’re not working late tonight, are you? Can you be home early?”

After putting a spoon in each bowl, Karen Hayes finally stopped bustling around and looked at her daughter. “I’ll make a big dinner tonight. We should celebrate properly, just the two of us.”

“Yeah, no overtime. I definitely won’t work late…”

Emma mumbled a reply while brushing her teeth, her mind already on other things.

“Good. I’ll go to the market later and buy some extra groceries. Is there anything you’d like to eat?”

Hearing that her mother intended to go to the market by herself, Emma turned her head in surprise. “You’re going to the market alone?”

“Yes! What’s wrong with that? Can’t I go by myself?!”

Karen Hayes said dismissively, seeing the shocked expression on her daughter’s face.

Urged on by her mother, Emma left the house.

Because she left late and got stuck in morning traffic, it was almost ten o’clock by the time Emma arrived at the hospital.

She parked her car, walked briskly into the first-floor lobby, and pressed the button for the hematology department on the 15th floor.

Ten in the morning was the busiest time at the hospital, crowded with people coming for appointments or to visit patients.

Emma squeezed into the elevator, surrounded by a dense crowd for a full minute before reaching the 15th floor.

When the elevator doors opened, she was pushed out by the people around her before she even had a chance to step forward on her own.

Phew…

Though it wasn't voluntary, the air felt significantly fresher the moment she was out of the elevator.
