Of course, Brandon still felt that despite Lillian's terrifying threats, she wouldn't actually go through with it.
If she did, there would be no turning back. They would be sworn enemies from then on, and he was betting his life that she didn't have the heart to pull the trigger on her own flesh and blood.
However, right now, Lillian just might expose everything out of pure rage.
If she did, the damages to the Mercer Group would be immeasurable, and his own reputation would take a fatal hit.
He still needed to run the Mercer Group; he absolutely could not afford a scandal.
Even now, while the live-streamed apology was ongoing, the one taking the fall was Sabrina, not him.
So, after weighing his options, Brandon decided to return the items to Lillian first.
As for the money, he would just have to figure something else out.
After all, if he didn't hand everything back, Lillian would undoubtedly go for the jugular.
Years ago, she had already been designated as the heir to the Lancaster family's estate. Those assets rightfully belonged to her—Brandon had to admit that.
Even though she had signed the severance agreement, that only cut her ties with the Mercer family. Lillian was still the recognized heir of the Lancaster family.
Brandon was backed into a corner with no way out. Given the current situation, his only option was to retrieve all the items.
The timeframe had been too short, so only a couple of pieces had actually been auctioned off. He figured he wouldn't be able to get those back, and Lillian wouldn't be able to do much about it.
But he had to return what he still had on hand immediately.
After a bout of silent fury, Brandon finally packed up the goods and delivered them to Lillian in person.
Unless he bought them back at a premium, which was impossible since he had no extra cash on hand.
Lillian scoffed. "Consider it returned? I had to spend my own money to buy back my own property, and you call that a return?"
Lillian had indeed spent millions on that item at the auction, but Brandon didn't have a dime to reimburse her.
"You should be thanking God that you got the stuff back at all. If you don't consider it returned, what else can you do? Do you honestly think I have the money to pay you back right now?"
Brandon guessed that Lillian probably wouldn't call the police. Plus, since he had returned the bulk of the items, she likely wouldn't expose him either. He decided to just play dirty.
Faced with his shamelessness, Lillian swallowed her anger. She really had no other options right now but to tolerate it.
"Brandon, I have security cameras in this house. Don't push your luck!"
