Celia finally tore her gaze away from the horizon just as Dolores appeared. She hadn't seen her in what felt like a lifetime. The child looked slightly different, but she was still heartbreakingly thin and hadn't grown an inch. It was painfully obvious that her parents had still been neglecting her.
A bitter ache gripped Celia's chest as she hurried forward.
Dolores recognized her instantly. She broke into a run, practically throwing herself forward. "Auntie! Auntie!"
Celia caught her in a tight embrace, the dam finally breaking as her tears fell like rain. "Oh, sweetheart... you're a good girl. Auntie is going to give you a new name. You're not going to be tied to them anymore. From now on, you're starting a brand new life with me."
Dolores didn't entirely understand, but the promise of going to school and staying with Auntie was more than enough.
She reached up with her tiny hands to wipe Celia's cheeks. "Auntie, why are you crying? Is it because Mom made you pay my allowance and took all your money? Are you broke now? It's okay. I don't eat much, and I can do lots of chores! Please don't send me away. I just want to go to school and be successful like you."
Hearing those words, Celia sobbed even harder. The child was far too mature for her age, and it broke her heart.
Dolores kept stubbornly wiping away Celia's tears. "Auntie..."
Celia pulled her close, burying her face in her hair. "Auntie has money. I'm going to have so much money. You can eat as much as you want, and you're going to go to the best schools. But... you're never going to see your mom, dad, grandparents, or brother again."
Dolores didn't miss a beat. "As long as I can stay with you and go to school, I don't care. I won't go looking for them. I want to stay with you forever."
She was too young to fully grasp the finality of it. But even if the foreign country promised a life of luxury, she had zero desire to join her parents. All she wanted was an education.
Celia held her tight, pressing a tender kiss to her forehead.
