Celia knew the truth. Even if they wanted to come back, they never would. Their permanent exile meant two fewer victims in the world.
From now on, she was solely Celia Bennett.
Celia gently stroked the little girl's hair. "How about Auntie gives you a new name? Your old one belongs in the past. From now on, your name is Amy. Amy Turner."
Amy didn't ask why. She simply nodded. "If you say it's a good name, then I love it."
Auntie was educated and smart. If she picked the name, it had to be perfect.
Lillian, seeing that the ship was long gone, checked her watch. "It's late. We should head back. Miss Bennett, I'll take care of getting little Amy enrolled in school. However, I'd suggest giving her some time to adjust to her new life before throwing her into classes. Let her get used to the environment first."
She paused, thinking logistics. "Since you work full-time, you won't be able to watch her all day. I'll send a maid over from Halfridge Villas to handle the cooking and daily chores. You can focus on spending quality time with her when you're off the clock."
Celia protested quickly. "Ms. Mercer, you don't have to go through all that trouble. Amy is incredibly capable. She can cook, clean, and run the house by herself. Even if I'm at work, she won't wander off or get into trouble."
Lillian gave her a firm look. "You're talking about how she survived in the village. She finally escaped that life—do you really want her playing housekeeper here? Besides, Northwyn is completely alien to her. Leaving her alone in a strange city isn't safe, and locking her inside all day won't help her adjust to a normal childhood. Don't argue with me on this. Just consider it an investment so you can focus entirely on your work."
Celia swallowed her pride and nodded. Lillian was right.
This was Northwyn, a sprawling metropolis, not their old rural village. Celia wouldn't be able to function at work if she was constantly terrified for Amy's safety. Lillian's arrangement was the best possible outcome for both of them.
Celia accepted the offer with deep gratitude.
