"You should have told me sooner," Debbie cooed, dripping with fake sympathy. "I would have figured something out for you."
Bella bit her lip in frustration. "I did tell you I was strapped for cash, Ms. Harris."
"Oh, dear... I had no idea it was this serious," Debbie stammered.
"So, when can we expect those funds back?" Bella pushed. "Once that money comes in, I can settle my debts."
Debbie squeezed Bella's hands tighter. "Don't you worry. Since it's an emergency, I promise I'll get that money back for you before the end of the month. You have my word."
Bella offered a strained smile. "Thank you. Let's consider it a deal."
"Of course! I'm about to be your mother-in-law. Would I ever steer you wrong? Hurting you would mean hurting my only son. I only want what's best for both of you."
Bella believed her. After all, what mother didn't love her son?
