"Lucian, you seem to have forgotten that we cut ties a long time ago."
Grace crouched down, shining her phone's flashlight on Lucian's face. "Cutting the brake lines? Were you trying to kill me?"
"I... I wasn't! I was just trying to scare you!" Lucian's bravado crumbled. He was a classic bully who preyed on the weak and feared the strong.
"It was Amelia! That woman, Amelia, put me up to it! She gave me money! She said it was just a prank!"
Grace let out a cold laugh.
She remembered a time in her childhood when Lucian was disciplined at school for fighting and came home to take his anger out on her.
He had locked her in the dark basement for three whole days without food or water.
It was the closest she had ever come to death.
Lucian had worn the same expression back then. "I was just trying to scare her. How was I supposed to know she couldn't handle a little hunger?"
"Scare me?"
Grace stood up, her eyes turning instantly glacial. "This is attempted murder. Felix, call the police. Give them the surveillance footage, the tools he used, and the recording of what just happened. All of it."
"Since you love prison so much, I'll help you get back there."
Lucian began to scream hysterically. "Grace, you'll pay for this! I'm your brother! You're really going to send me to prison?!"
"Take him away."
Damien stepped out from the shadows and wrapped an arm around Grace's shoulders.
"He's not worth your time."
An hour later, in the interrogation room, Lucian sang like a canary, hoping for a reduced sentence.
"She gave me the money, she was the one who suggested I do it! I have the chat logs, they're on my phone!"
The police took his phone and pulled up his chat history with Amelia.
In Lucian's memory, all the suggestive words, all the face-to-face provocations, had left no trace of evidence.
Even the fifty thousand dollars was framed as "financial assistance provided out of sympathy for a recently released inmate."
"This... this isn't real! That's not what she said!" Lucian tore at his hair in despair. "She was lying to me! That bitch set me up!"
Meanwhile.
The Cross family's legal department swiftly released a statement:
[Out of good will, Ms. Amelia Cross provided Mr. Lucian Hart with funds for living expenses and repeatedly advised him against retaliating against Ms. Grace Hart in their chat conversations. Ms. Cross is deeply saddened by Mr. Hart's criminal actions and is willing to cooperate fully with the police investigation. Furthermore, Ms. Cross reserves the right to pursue legal action against Mr. Hart for defamation in response to his baseless accusations.]
The same trick, the same script.
Amelia had once again washed her hands of the whole affair.
Not only that, she had even managed to frame herself as some kind of saint.
