The result of the bid was no surprise.
The Clarke family, with its absolute technological and cost advantages, won the massive government contract worth hundreds of billions.
After the meeting, Mr. Halstead specifically asked Grace to stay behind.
“Ms. Hart, so young and so brilliant,” Mr. Halstead said with emotion. “We people in research need to have that drive and that ferocity. There’s no room for falsehood.”
“You’re too kind, Mr. Halstead. I only did what I had to do,” Grace said, lowering her head humbly.
“Actually…” Mr. Halstead paused, taking an unopened recommendation letter from his briefcase.
Grace was taken aback, unsure of what he meant.
“My good-for-nothing grandson ran over and gave this to me just now,” Mr. Halstead sighed. “He said he watched your presentation from the audience and felt deeply ashamed. He said that true strength comes from merit, not from a piece of paper. He asked me to return this letter. He wants to get in on his own abilities.”
Grace’s eyes suddenly welled up.
There was a time when she, too, had desperately wanted to be recognized for her own abilities, only to be crushed by reality time and time again.
And now, her persistence had not only won the competition but had even changed the trajectory of a young man’s life.
“Ms. Hart, you’ve shown me the backbone of a true researcher,” Mr. Halstead said, extending his hand for a firm handshake. “You’re a good kid. In the future, if you’re ever wronged, don’t just take it. In this field, as long as you have the skills, you can always stand tall.”
“Thank you, Mr. Halstead,” Grace’s voice was choked with emotion.
When she left the conference hall, the rain outside had stopped.
The fresh scent of damp earth filled the air.
Amelia’s car was parked by the side of the road. The window was slightly ajar, and faint screams could be heard from inside.
“Ahhh! Grace! I’m going to kill you!”
Grace merely glanced at the car before looking away. She had no interest in the impotent rage of a loser.
“Tired?”
Damien walked over and opened the car door for her.
“A little,” Grace nodded honestly. She had been on edge throughout the presentation, and now that she could relax, her whole body ached.
