Laurinda didn’t bother arguing with Kenny anymore. She hung up, not even hesitating. Threats didn’t scare her. She’d reached a point where nothing really mattered. If she had to drag all of Stonehaven down with her, so be it. She had no regrets left.
Kenny sat in his office, staring at his phone after the abrupt end to their call. He knew Laurinda hated him now too. But what else could he do? Dealing with those stubborn old men was the only way he knew to keep her safe.
Someone knocked on the office door. Several elders walked in, their faces tense as they took in Kenny’s troubled expression.
“Still no word from Laurinda?” one of them asked.
“I talked to her. This isn’t her fault. The virus must’ve come from the files I brought back. I’m already working on a fix, so there’s no need to panic.”
The elders exchanged looks, their brows drawn tight in frustration.
“Kenny, what’s going on with you lately? First you lost a shipment worth billions, and now because of you, Stonehaven’s entire network is down. Do you have any idea how much damage you’ve caused? If you can’t handle this, remember, your job isn’t set in stone.”
Kenny looked at them, his eyes cold, voice steady.
“If you’re so worried, go out there and see if anyone else wants to clean up this mess.”
One of the elders spluttered, clearly offended. “Kenny, do you really think you’re untouchable?”
The head elder pointed at Kenny, his hand shaking. He knew perfectly well no one else could hold this position. That was why they only dared to go after Laurinda behind Kenny’s back, never to his face.
Kenny didn’t bother responding. He picked up his coffee and took a sip.
“Let me give you some advice. Stop trying to make life difficult for Laurinda. Did you all forget what she did? She took out three of our major bases by herself. If she decides to go off the rails, not even I can stop her. Are you sure you want to risk that again?”
