When Laurinda spotted Shirley’s mom, she greeted her with a warm smile. “Hi.”
“Laurinda!” Shelton called out, his whole face lighting up. He always got excited to see her, probably because every time she visited, she brought him a bag full of gifts.
Mabel walked over, reached for Laurinda’s hand, and gave her a gentle squeeze. “Are you really going to spend the holiday by yourself? Why not come stay with us?” She glanced over at Adolphus as she spoke, her protective instincts kicking in. Laurinda had always been like family to her, and the idea of Laurinda spending time alone with a guy made her uneasy.
Laurinda shook her head, smiling. “It’s okay, really. I’m spending the holiday with the Larsons this year. You don’t need to worry about me.”
Mabel’s shoulders relaxed. “Alright, then.” She trusted the Larsons, so she didn’t push it any further.
“It’s getting late. We shouldn’t keep the car waiting outside. Let’s head out. If you need anything, just give me a call.”
“Okay, take care,” Laurinda replied, waving at the three of them. Shirley looked a little sad to say goodbye, but knowing they’d see each other again once school started made her perk up. She left with a smile.
Adolphus reached for Laurinda’s hand, leading her toward the boarding gate. Laurinda frowned. “Wait, didn’t we forget to check in?”
“No need. We can just head straight over,” he said.
When they got to the gate, a flight attendant spotted them and hurried over, handing Adolphus their tickets. Without missing a beat, she led them through a private entrance.
Laurinda suddenly remembered Jasper teasing Adolphus about his special connections. Now it all made sense. This man really did have some pull at the airport.
By the time they landed back in Apex, night had already fallen. They stepped outside and spotted Sam waiting by the curb. Laurinda blinked in surprise. “When did you get here?”
“Three days ago,” Sam replied. “Had some things to take care of. Come on, hop in. Are you two heading straight home or do you want to grab something to eat first?”
