From Ashes of Scandal to His Embrace (Laurinda) novel Chapter 285

“Everything’s fine, really, don’t stress about me.”

Bonnie couldn’t help feeling a little awkward. She figured Laurinda must know she’d just snapped at Harrell.

Laurinda glanced at the food on the table, her brows drawing together. “You still haven’t eaten? It’s so late.”

“I already had dinner. Arrow fed me earlier.” Bonnie glanced away, picking at the blanket. “Harrell brought the chicken soup. I’m just not hungry, so I don’t want it.”

She avoided Laurinda’s eyes, unsure how to explain what was going on between her and Harrell. It was complicated, way more than she could lay out in a few words.

“If you don’t want it, then skip it.” Laurinda’s tone was gentle. “You need to focus on getting better and keeping your spirits up. If there’s anything you’re craving, just tell me. I can have our chef whip something up for you.”

“She can’t just eat whatever she wants right now,” Harrell cut in, sounding tense. He hovered nearby, clearly worried Laurinda might actually grant Bonnie’s wish and bring her forbidden foods.

Bonnie rolled her eyes. “You’re not my doctor, Harrell. Why do you have to be so controlling? My doctor is Adolphus, and he hasn’t said anything, so just… zip it, okay?”

Every time Harrell tried to micromanage her, Bonnie got a headache. It was her body. She could handle herself. She didn’t need him jumping in every two seconds.

Adolphus picked up the chart from the bedside. He skimmed it, then spoke in a calm, even voice. “Actually, Harrell’s right. You shouldn’t eat just anything right now. Your wound is still healing. Laurinda had some special meals prepared for you—Arrow probably gave you one for dinner. Hang in there a few more days. Once you’re further along, you can have something with more flavor.”

He remembered Laurinda mentioning that she and Bonnie had similar tastes, both fans of spicy, heavy food. But with injuries like this, there was no way Bonnie could indulge just yet.

Adolphus set the chart down and glanced at Harrell, who looked like he still had plenty to say. Walking over, Adolphus took Harrell by the arm.

“Let’s give them some time alone. You and I can go over Fidelia’s situation.”
