From Ashes of Scandal to His Embrace (Laurinda) novel Chapter 299

Laurinda tried not to laugh as the voice changer on the other end of the call nagged at her, sounding just like a fussy mom.

He was always like this, fussing over her, keeping her company late into the night.

There were so many times she’d wanted to meet him in person, but every time she brought it up, he’d turn her down. After a while, she just stopped asking.

“Okay, okay, you’re giving me a headache with all this nagging. I’ll play a little longer, then go to bed. You go do your thing. I’m hanging up.”

She wished him goodnight, ended the call, and logged out. Then she got back to what she’d been working on before. By the time she finished, the sky outside was starting to lighten. She was finally feeling sleepy, so she curled up on her bed, hugged Adolphus’s pillow, and drifted off almost immediately.

The next time she opened her eyes, she realized someone was lying beside her.

A man in silk pajamas. The top few buttons were undone, showing off his smooth chest and those ridiculously tempting collarbones. Laurinda couldn’t help swallowing, her mind wandering for a split second before she forced herself to look up at his face instead.

His eyelashes trembled a little, long and dark like little fans. The hand he’d draped over her waist pulled her closer, tucking her right up against him.

Her cheek pressed to his chest, she could feel his warmth and the steady, powerful beat of his heart. This wasn’t a dream. Adolphus was really here.

“When did you get back?” she asked, her voice still a little sleepy.

“About two hours ago.” Adolphus opened his eyes and looked down at her, his gaze falling to the dark smudges beneath hers.

“You haven’t been sleeping well?”

“I can’t sleep when you’re gone,” Laurinda admitted, not bothering to hide it. She wrapped her arms around his waist. For some reason, just having him here made her feel safe all over again.

It was kind of embarrassing, actually. It hadn’t even been that long, and she was already used to having him around. Now she didn’t know what to do without him.

Seeing her so honest, Adolphus couldn’t bring himself to scold her for not taking care of herself. He took her hand and gently checked her pulse, only relaxing when he was sure she was fine, just a little short on sleep.
