Adrian POV
When I saw Amber crying, I couldn’t help but try to comfort her, knowing full well she might push me away. To my surprise, she pulled me closer. She cried into my chest, and for a moment, I had my Amber back. For a moment, I felt like everything would go back to normal.
Then she asked me to make love to her. I didn’t waste time reminding her how much I love her. I poured every bit of my love for her into each kiss and touch. The entire time, she kissed me like it would be our last time. She opened herself to me like she was saying goodbye. It scares the hell out of me, because I don’t know what she is thinking.
Once we were done and I was holding her in my arms, I kissed the top of her head. “I’ve missed this, Amber.”
She didn’t snuggle closer or look at me. That’s what she would used to do. We would make love, and then she would raise her eyes to me and look at me with pure love as we spoke about our future. All she did was hum low and then said, “Me too.”
“When you were crying earlier, was it because of something I did?” I asked.
“No,” she replied quietly. “Everything is my fault, Adrian. I can’t tell you anything. Just know that I’m really sorry and if I could go back and change things, I would.”
I sighed. I hate not knowing what happened. I hate that I can’t help her. I hate that no matter how much I try to figure this out, I have no answers. I help run a pack and figure out pack problems, and yet I can’t seem to help my mate when it matters most.
“I have to meet Isaiah in the training facility in an hour. I’m going to take a proper shower this time,” I said.
She chuckled, “Yeah, I guess I should join you too.”
She smiled softly at me, and my heart broke more. She hasn’t smiled at me in what feels like months. The feeling of her telling me goodbye is nagging in my head. Thor, for the first time in what feels like forever, is actually wondering what’s wrong with our mate. He had practically given up on our mate. He wasn’t handling her rejection well. He was angry a lot.
We showered, and the entire time I’m kissing her, and she doesn’t back away. In fact, she opens herself to me completely. She embraces me and runs her hands all over my body, like she used to do.
“Amber, I know you have a curse. I’m going to do everything I can to break it for you. Then whatever you did, we will face it together, okay?” I said, trying to nurture this moment and not let it slip away.
She looked at me with her beautiful wide eyes. There was sadness and resignation in them. “Okay, Adrian,” she said softly. The tone in her voice was sweet but empty. She was acting like everything was too late.
“Please believe me, Amber.”
“I believe you will try. Only I know how to break it, Adrian, and I can’t even tell you,” she said sadly.
I pulled her chin to me. “Hey, we will figure this out. Don’t give up on us, please,” I pleaded.
She grabbed my face gently and kissed me again.
“You need to meet with Isaiah. Let’s finish in here,” she said.
I sighed, but we finished our shower, got dressed, and then we parted ways. She went to talk to Rory, who can now come here that Aiden and Thalia are back. She wanted to see Isaiah and Kaia. She hated missing the ceremonies, but there was no coverage for Blackstone if Jonah and her came.
Kaia and Rory are supervising the security upgrades while Sinclair is away with Aric. I’m filling in for Aric and helping Isaiah figure out who would make a good Lead Warrior and Gamma. Which means I’m on my way to the training facility.
When I get there, Isaiah is working with the warriors that are not double agents for Paul. He and I decided to wait for Alpha Max to return from his visit with his family before deciding what to do about his son. From there, we will gauge what to do with the warriors. We would hate to lose more warriors, especially since there are some in the dungeons already.
