As Steven gently wrapped a bandage around my knee, his voice, clean and magnetic, filled the quiet room. “Zephyra, you and Horace were childhood sweethearts, weren’t you? Same school, same class, even desk mates in middle school. Your parents knew each other.”
My eyes widened in surprise. “How did you know that? Did you have me investigated?”
In our past life, in all our years of marriage, he had never once mentioned Horace. In this life, the fact that he even remembered his name was shocking enough. But this level of detail…
His voice was a low, slow murmur. “Is it so strange that I would? Have you forgotten what kind of family the Lancasters are?”
I had no response.
His handsome face was unreadable, his voice dropping even lower. “I heard you were very close. Even though you weren't in the same class in high school, he came to your classroom every day. He walked you home every afternoon. When someone sent you a love letter and wouldn’t leave you alone, he punched the guy. He took care of all your unwanted admirers.”
“Everyone called him your loyal guard dog. He beat up anyone who dared to bother you. The whole school thought you were a couple. Eventually, no one dared to pursue either of you.”
“Everyone assumed you would end up together. Until the car accident. He risked his life to save you. You walked away with minor injuries; he was crippled. To get him the treatment he needed to walk again, you married me, and he went abroad. It sounds like a tragic, romantic love story, cut short by fate.”
His tone was completely flat, devoid of any anger or jealousy. It was so placid that it sent a shiver down my spine. Steven was not a magnanimous person. Even if he didn’t love me, his possessiveness was a powerful force. The fact that he had dug this deep into my past meant that he cared. A lot.
I stared at his beautiful, cold face, my heart pounding with a nervous rhythm. “When did you have me investigated? When did you find all this out?”
He finished tying the bandage and looked up at me, his calm voice dropping a bombshell. “Before we were married.”
Before we were married?
The color drained from my face. “You mean, you knew? From the very beginning?”
So, in both our past and present lives, Steven had known about my relationship with Horace.
