Julian looked at me blankly, a confused expression on his handsome face. He ruffled my hair.

“Who said I was broke? I have my own business. Why would I be broke? I was just afraid you hated rich people.”

Julian gazed at me, his lips parting. “Your mother did. Your father was a poor young man. Your grandfather said he had a poor character and would never amount to anything. He was afraid your mother would suffer if she married him, so he tried everything to stop her, even locking her in her room. But with your Aunt Janice’s help, she jumped out of the window one night and eloped with your father. Your Aunt Janice ran away with them.”

“After you were born, your grandfather turned a blind eye. But your father was small-minded. In all the years they were married, he never once visited your grandfather, and he forbade your mother and Aunt Janice from going home.”

“Your mother not only stopped coming home, but she also refused any financial help from us. She threw back every penny we gave her. She sold the house we bought for her.”
