“It doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’re happy with the house. Uncle Julian has plenty of money, so you can buy whatever you want.”
This sudden windfall felt too good to be true. Was I dreaming?
I felt like I was about to faint from sheer joy. This was the dream I’d had for years, and now it was actually happening!
Before I could even speak, Ryan strode in, coolly pulling off his sunglasses. He threw himself at Julian, grabbing his arm dramatically.
“Hey! You’re secretly buying my cousin a house, but what about me? I want one too!”
Julian heartlessly shoved him off. “Ask your own father.”
Ryan just huffed, then surreptitiously slipped an appointment card into my hand with a wink.
“See? He plays favorites,” he whispered conspiratorially. “Since he’s biased toward you, I’ll be biased toward you, too. Your new place isn’t decorated or furnished yet, is it? How about I take care of that for you?”
I was stunned. I had literally just met Ryan today, yet he was acting so familiar and being incredibly generous. I was completely floored.
“Oh, no, you don’t have to do that! You’re so young, you’re like a little brother to me. The furniture can wait.”
Ryan snapped his fingers, his tone playfully imperious.
“Nope. Uncle Julian got you a gift, so I have to get you one, too. Don’t worry, I just won a race and I’m loaded. It’s all prize money I earned myself, more than enough to furnish your whole place with the best of everything.”
He leaned in and added, “Think of it as a divorce gift, not a welcome-to-the-family gift. You have to accept it. It’s the only way to leave that scumbag far, far behind.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. Good things really do come all at once. The good luck just kept rolling in.
