Myron sucked in a sharp breath, clearly shocked by my ferocity. He swallowed hard, frozen in place. The few remaining patrons in the restaurant stared in horror, and the owner rushed over, pale-faced, trying to intervene.
I released my grip. Verna sputtered, pulling her head from the tank, her hair soaked and her eyes blazing with hatred. She coughed for a long moment, unable to speak.
“I know Steven will protect you,” I said calmly. “Go ahead and tell him I bullied you. But you listen to me: I can’t stand being accused of things I didn’t do. And unless Steven kills me, I’ll hit you once, and I’ll hit you again.”
Before Verna could respond, Jacob’s groggy voice cut through the tension, laced with surprise and delight. “Verna? Verna, you… you came to find me?”
He staggered up from the table and stumbled toward her. Even on the verge of collapsing, his face was lit with pure joy.
“You couldn’t bear to leave me, could you? I couldn’t either. We…”
“You couldn’t bear to leave me, yet you have time to go drinking with your dear supervisor?” Verna’s voice was dripping with sarcasm. She looked pathetic and beautiful, her red-rimmed eyes making her seem all the more pitiable.
“Fine. If you want me back, then prove it. Teach your boss a lesson for me. She just shoved my head in a fish tank. Stand up for me, and win or lose, I’ll give you another chance.”
Jacob’s jaw dropped as he looked at me. Myron immediately stepped in front of me, his handsome face devoid of its usual playfulness, now grim and serious.
“She accused you of having an affair with Zephyra, tarnished her reputation, and threw water in her face. Zephyra was just defending herself. You can mess with anyone else, kid, but don’t you dare touch her.”
I crossed my arms, watching Jacob with a detached coldness. I could already picture it: he would choose love, turning on me to defend Verna. It’s what Steven had done in my past life, and Jacob’s devotion to Verna was just as intense.
