I looked up from my phone, exasperated. “Can’t you send someone else? I’m not the only designer at Star Corp.”
“No one else has your eye or your reputation. Come on, do me a favor. You’re about to leave to study with Mr. Taylor, and I won’t see you for ages. Just do this one thing for me, help me make a good impression. Please?”
I checked the time. The showcase ended at 11:30 AM, and my meeting with the producers was in the evening. It was doable.
“Fine. Just because you stood up for me today, I’ll do it.”
Myron grinned, praising my ruthless takedown of Verna. He said he’d never seen a woman so fierce, that he’d been too scared to move. He joked that Steven must have had a tough time with me, but fell silent under my icy glare.
He dropped me off at home first before taking Jacob. As soon as I was inside, I learned later, he called Steven, his voice urgent.
“Steven, something huge just happened! You have no idea what I just saw. What is wrong with you, do you even want to stay married? Some girl named Verna is causing trouble, she went right after your wife! I was so pissed. If I were her, I’d leave you in a heartbeat…”
The next morning, I arrived at the office with my packed suitcase. The gossip about me had mostly died down in the last couple of days, or at least no one said anything to my face. Jacob had taken the morning off. Myron gave me his business card, the event itinerary, and an assistant. He told me that once the showcase was over, I could hand everything off to her and head straight to the airport.
It was a thoughtful plan, but I never expected the assistant to be Linda.
She stood there in a chic tweed suit and dramatic silver earrings, her hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail. Arms crossed, she looked me up and down.
“What’s with that look? Are you not happy to have me as your assistant?”
I didn’t know what to say. Linda had always disliked me. She had gained a sliver of respect for me after the competition, but the animosity was still there.
