I looked up at the man. He wore a Rolex watch and an emerald necklace, dripping with an air of ostentatious wealth. Compared to him, my simple dress seemed plain.
“I was looking at it first. You can wait your turn.”
The young man sized me up, a smirk playing on his lips.
“Listen, beautiful, don’t play games with me. Do you have any idea who I am? You really want to fight me over a piece of jewelry?”
I was neither intimidated nor curious about his identity. I examined the brooch again, but when I didn’t see the logo I was looking for, I placed it back on the display. Myron only collected pieces from Coco Bunny.
“It’s just a brooch. I don’t need to know who you are to buy it. It’s all yours now.”
The man took off his sunglasses, revealing a pair of large, doe-like eyes set in a soft, round face. The effect was surprisingly disarming. He gestured for his assistant to purchase the item, then fell into step beside me.
“Hey, if you like that peacock brooch, I can give it to you. A gift, between new friends.”
He gave me a wink. Was he trying to buy jewelry or pick me up?
I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye. “No, thank you. You keep it.”
Just then, Linda reappeared. Without a word, she pulled me behind her protectively, lifting her chin and giving the man a cold look.
“Who are you, and why are you following her?”
I was momentarily stunned by Linda’s sudden display of protectiveness. Since when did she have my back?
The man looked from her to me, his focus unwavering.
“What’s with the attitude? I was just trying to say hello. We’re probably in the same industry. What’s wrong with a little networking?”
