I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 319

Oliver’s jaw dropped. He stared, wide-eyed.

“Wha-what? She’s… she’s with you?! But aren’t you married? Is she… is she your wife?!”

Steven’s face was a mask of indifference, but Oliver seemed to understand. He swallowed hard, forcing a laugh.

“Oh, so this is Mrs. Lancaster. My apologies, my deepest apologies. Everything I just said was complete nonsense. Not that your wife isn’t wonderful, of course! You have excellent taste, Mr. Lancaster. Truly, she’s incredible. I was just…”

Steven shot him a cold look, and Oliver immediately shut up, zipping his lips with his plump, round fingers.

I stood my ground, raising an eyebrow as I watched the silent exchange between them. Oliver’s face was shifting between shades of green and white, a look of pure panic on his face. I found it strange. The Brown and Lancaster families were on equal footing, so why was Oliver so afraid of Steven? They should have been rivals.

But then, I supposed old money families valued strong bloodlines above all else. Oliver was just a playboy. I couldn’t expect too much from him.

Just as I finished the thought, Steven was standing in front of me. He moved so quickly, so close, that when I looked up, his face was all I could see. My heart leaped into my throat, and I instinctively took two steps back.

When I get flustered, I tend to trip over my own feet. I stumbled, and just as I was about to fall, Steven’s arm shot out, circling my waist and pulling me back against him. I crashed into his hard chest, the familiar scent of sandalwood instantly filling my senses.

My body went rigid. I shoved him away, standing up straight.

He stood over me, one hand in his pocket, his handsome face impassive as he looked down at me.

“I’m not going to bite. Why are you always running away?”

I didn’t want to run. It made me look weak, like I was afraid of him. But my body had a mind of its own. It was a visceral reaction, born of both fear and a deep-seated unwillingness to be near him.

I lifted my chin, meeting his cold gaze.

“Because I want to. Maybe if you learned a little something about personal space, I wouldn’t have to.”

Linda blinked, looking from me to Steven and back again, a confused expression on her face. “Mr. Lancaster.”

Steven didn’t even glance at her. His eyes were locked on me. Oliver, getting the hint, quickly pulled Linda aside.

“Hey, I have a question for you.”
