I shot him a scornful look and wrenched my arm free.
“I don’t get you. You’re so quick to defend Verna, always assuming she’s the victim. We got divorced less than two days ago, and you’re already rushing to her side. Why don’t you just marry her instead of constantly bothering me? Why do you have to be such a player?”
Steven’s frown deepened. “What are you talking about? I’ve been out of town on business since the divorce.”
I didn’t believe him for a second. The mocking smile on my face widened. Verna wasn’t the type to just hop in a car with any random guy. Tall, handsome, luxury car—it had Steven written all over it.
“Keep lying. Even if you didn’t pick her up yourself, are you going to deny that you want to marry her? You already bought her a house overseas. That was your grand proposal, wasn’t it? That’s why you divorced me as soon as you got back.”
The house was a fact, in this life and the last. I wanted to see how he would talk his way out of this one.
Steven’s face was grim.
He stared at me, his voice sharp. “I bought her a house because you assaulted her roommate and she was nearly attacked herself. You were there, you know what happened. Her reputation at school was destroyed. If she didn’t move, she could have been bullied to death.”
“But to say it was a marriage proposal is ridiculous. Are you jealous? Or does making baseless accusations against me make you feel better?”
What the hell? Make me feel better about what? Whether he was guilty or not had nothing to do with me. I was just sick of his contradictions, of him acting one way and doing another, chasing after Verna while still clinging to me. It was infuriating.
I narrowed my eyes.
“Verna said it herself, and your best friend heard her. Go ask him if you don’t believe me. And even if you didn’t explicitly propose, what you did certainly gave her that impression. What normal man just buys a woman a house?”
His lips thinned, but he didn’t answer.
