I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 359

Horace suddenly sat up straight, looking even more nervous than I was. “Mom…”

“Okay.” I cut Horace off and smiled at him. “We’ll be right back. You wait here. If you need anything, just press the call button. My brother will be here soon to keep you company.”

Horace’s handsome face tensed, his brow furrowed. Mrs. Spencer washed a strawberry for him and popped it into his mouth. “Don’t be ridiculous, Horace. What’s wrong with having Zephyra help me carry a few things? I watched her grow up. Do you think I’m going to bully her? You’re being so petty.”

Seeing me nod, Horace finally took the strawberry and said with concern, “She’s just recovered from being sick, don’t let her carry anything heavy.”

Mrs. Spencer laughed in exasperation, poking his forehead. “A son is a son 'til he gets a wife. I really should have had a second child. You’re going to be the death of me.”

I couldn’t help but smile. It felt like we were back to the time before Horace’s accident, when Mrs. Spencer would always protect me and playfully scold him for my sake.

Mrs. Spencer and I left the hospital room together. My phone vibrated. I glanced down and saw it was my dad calling. I hung up immediately.

I was too busy to deal with him right now. He’d better not make trouble for himself.

Once we were out of the hospital elevator and away from the crowds, Mrs. Spencer sighed and spoke slowly. “Zephyra, are you and Horace together now?”

My heart leaped into my throat. I felt a surge of nervousness, not like a nervous bride meeting her in-laws, but a fear that she, someone I had been close to my whole life, would dislike me.

“Yes, we just decided.”

Mrs. Spencer suddenly stopped walking and looked at me with a complex expression. “Zephyra, I’m Horace’s mother. I’ve always known he likes you. The Spencer family isn’t a wealthy and powerful family like the Lancasters. We don’t care about class distinctions or whether it’s a first or second marriage. I watched you grow up, and if you and Horace are happy, I would be happy for you from the bottom of my heart.”

“Though when Horace had his first accident, I truly resented you. I resented that the person he saved had to be you, which meant I couldn’t even get angry or hate you for it. He’s such a good kid, yet he almost ended up crippled. Do you know how much I wanted to kill someone?”

At this, her emotions started to crumble, tears welling in her eyes. “That driver, and you… I hated you both. I wished I never had to see either of you again. But then, you married into the Lancaster family to help Horace stand again, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful. My prejudice against you gradually faded.”

Her words made my own heart feel even more complicated. My lips trembled. “…I’m sorry.”

“It’s not really your fault. It’s the fault of that drunk driver. I was the one who couldn’t see clearly,” Mrs. Spencer said, wiping her tears with her hand and sighing again. “Your mother, my dearest friend… after she passed, you had no one to protect you. When I heard you were being mistreated by the Lancaster family, my heart truly ached for you.”
