But seeing him beg so desperately to get back together, and still fail, I couldn't help but feel a sliver of pity for him.
Verna's reason for the breakup was just absurd. Jacob and I had a normal working relationship; we went our separate ways after work and never even had a meal alone together. How on earth did she see a romance blossoming between us?
She, on the other hand, was already setting up dinner dates right after the breakup. She showed no sadness as her ex-boyfriend pleaded with her. I was starting to wonder if she even had a heart.
Just as I was lost in thought, the noise around me suddenly died down. I glanced up to see Verna staring directly at me, a cold, mocking smile on her lips.
"See that? You might not be interested in him, but who's to say he's not interested in you? He even followed you all the way here. I'm so honored."
Jacob’s eyes widened as he looked at me, his own eyes bloodshot and distraught. "Zephyra... The director didn't follow me here. She didn't even know where I was. Besides, she's been on a business trip all week. She probably just got back."
Verna laughed coolly. "There you go, defending her again. You know her schedule inside and out. How can you deny it? You've clearly fallen for her, too. You two should just get together already!"
Jacob clenched his fists. "Verna!"
I snorted. "I can't take this. Seriously, did they leave a sewer open somewhere? Because something this delusional must have crawled out."
Verna's face stiffened, her delicate fingers tightening around her teacup. She shot back with a cold smile.
"I think someone has a guilty conscience. Can't admit it, so you lash out instead. So uncivilized."
I gave her a half-smile. "My level of civility is situational. I meet fire with fire. I'm forever young, and my insults are forever sharp. If you enjoy whispering rumors about me in dark corners, you'd better cover your tracks. Slander is a crime, you know. And if I get annoyed, you might just find yourself in a courtroom."
I just didn't get it. Verna used to be so wonderful—beautiful, kind, she almost got hurt trying to save someone. How did she become so aggressive?
I even thought she didn't look as beautiful as she used to.
My words seemed to have struck a nerve. Verna stood up and started walking toward me.
"Verna..." Jacob tried to grab her arm, but she shook him off violently, glaring at him. "Don't touch me."
