Steven actually cracked a smile, but it was one of pure anger. "Zephyra, is your head full of water? The point is, why weren't you angry then?"
"You act like you care so much about Verna, but it only recently occurred to me that you're not angry that I'm with her. You're only angry that she bullied you, not that I helped her do it."
"Even today, when Verna made it clear in front of both of us that there's nothing between us, that we've never been involved, you probably didn't even care about the truth..."
He stopped abruptly, shutting his eyes tightly as if realizing he'd said too much.
His lips were deathly pale. He raised a hand to his forehead, and I could see the blue veins under his skin, as if his head was throbbing.
I stared at him, my fingers gripping the vase tightly, completely bewildered.
Given our past life, I knew Steven would do anything for Verna, that he would always protect and favor her. I was prepared for it, used to it. Why would I need to be angry?
As long as Verna stayed out of my way, our paths would never cross. Wasn't that for the best? For an ex-wife, I was being incredibly magnanimous. What was he so upset about?
Besides, he could say there was nothing between them, but he'd given her a house and defended her. Then he had the nerve to tell me she was just someone he had to protect and that I shouldn't overthink it.
Ha. What a ridiculous bastard. What wife could possibly accept that excuse?
But I was still confused. Did he really drag me here just to argue? I thought he wanted to settle the score for Verna.
Just then, Steven's cold, merciless voice cut through my thoughts again.
"Weren't you in Baxo? Weren't you with your cripple boyfriend? Weren't you determined to be with him, to help him get back on stage? What are you doing back here?"
"Am I not allowed back?" I shot back, my face hardening as I glared at him. "Steven, Horace is not a cripple. You're the head of Aether Studio, for crying out loud. Don't you think it's beneath you to bully a patient? Aren't you afraid of a little karma?"
Steven let out a cold laugh, his deep-set eyes narrowing into a chilling, bone-deep glare.
"He's not even worthy of my karma."
