I was stunned, watching in horror as Steven beat Jonas half to death.
The sheer brutality of the attack... he looked like he was trying to kill him!
A shiver ran down my spine. Had Steven lost his mind?
"Steven, stop! You're going to kill him!" I pushed myself up, ignoring the pain in my back, and stumbled over to them. Jonas was covered in blood and on the verge of passing out. Terrified, I grabbed Steven's arm. "Let the police handle him! If you keep this up, he could press charges and you'll go to jail!"
If Steven went to jail, I'd be indebted to him—a huge debt I didn't want.
I only needed him to call the police, not to avenge me. I didn't need him to do that. Our relationship wasn't like that.
Gordon, who had just arrived, looked on with his jaw practically on the floor. "Mr. Lancaster!"
Steven's cold, fierce eyes met mine. "Where else did he touch you?"
I didn't dare mention he'd kicked me. "Just let him go first."
Jonas managed to speak, his voice as faint as a buzzing mosquito. "I'm... I'm gonna press charges…" Before he could finish, Steven let go. Jonas crumpled to the floor with a pained groan, but he was so beaten and dazed that the sound was barely audible.
Steven glanced at Gordon. "Take care of this." Gordon immediately responded, "Yes, Mr. Lancaster," and hauled Jonas away by the arm.
I had wanted to call the police and maybe get a few kicks in myself before they arrived, just to let off some steam. But looking at Jonas now, I couldn't bring myself to touch him.
I was afraid I might actually kill him.
Steven looked down at the cut on my forehead, his eyes deep and devoid of warmth.
