"In that case, I take back what I just said. Next time I'm in trouble, don't get involved. Don't even call the police."
His expression suddenly darkened, all traces of a smile vanishing from his handsome face. The refined lines of his features hardened.
"What are you afraid of? That I'll be good to you and you won't be able to handle it? Or are you afraid of getting entangled with me again?"
I was blunt. "We're divorced. It was a nasty split. We can't even be friends, so getting entangled would only bring more trouble and heartache."
I had no intention of forgiving Steven, and there was no chance of us ever getting back together. He didn't need to act so strangely.
Steven's lips curved into a mocking smile. "What if... we were never divorced?"
My heart and mind jolted as if struck by lightning. My eyes flew wide in angry disbelief.
"What nonsense are you talking about?! I have the divorce certificate. How could we not be divorced?!"
If we weren't divorced, then what did that make me? What about my relationship with Horace? It was impossible. His hypothetical was invalid!
The elevator doors opened on the 20th floor. Steven carried me out, a playful smile on his face that didn't reach his eyes. "Is that so?"
Did he not get a certificate? What was wrong with him? He was insane!
I kicked my legs in frustration and pounded his chest. "Put me down! I'll walk myself!"
Steven didn't let go, instead heading straight for my room. I was both shocked and furious. "How do you know where I'm staying?"
He had me investigated! He came to the dinner for me, and now he knew my room number. What was he planning?
