I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 460

The next day, it was drizzling.

The weather was bad. I called my senior colleagues; one was stuck in a torrential downpour, the other in a blizzard. Neither could make it, but they wished me luck over the phone.

I accepted their well-wishes. I had originally been traveling with the group, but after what happened the other night, I started going to the competition venue alone. The only person I really talked to was Megan. I had been so tired yesterday that I hadn't even asked how she was doing, if she had even competed. Even if she had managed to get through the first round after surgery, she probably wouldn't be able to handle the second.

This was a global competition. Everyone was desperate to be at their best. Even the slightest setback could be devastating.

I was wearing a red dress under a long, pale white coat, carrying a large black umbrella against the rain, but I still felt like I was getting soaked.

Once inside the venue, I saw Gordon. He was standing right in front of me, smiling and greeting me.

“Ms. Jones.”

I gave him a polite nod and started to walk past, but Gordon stopped me. “Ms. Jones, do you have any plans this afternoon? I was wondering if I could ask… After Mr. Lancaster finished his meeting yesterday, he came back to find you'd already left. He thought you'd gone somewhere with Ms. Peters and spent all night looking for you. He wanted to invite you to dinner. Everything was already prepared, but you missed each other.”

I didn't stop walking, but I frowned.

Steven was actually taking what he'd said the other day seriously, but I had never agreed to have dinner with him.

Besides, he hadn't said a word about it last night when he claimed he'd been looking for me all evening.

“No, I won't be having dinner with him. We had a huge fight last night. I doubt he'll be in the mood to eat with me today, or ever again. Don't waste your effort.”

Gordon was stunned. “You and Mr. Lancaster fought again?!”

Seeing his reaction, I was confused. “Is this the first time you've heard that all we do is fight?”

“This time is different from the others. After the car accident, Mr. Lancaster…” Gordon bit his lip, not finishing his sentence, but he looked like disaster was imminent. “Alright, then. I'll let you get to it.”

With that, he hurried away.

I found it strange but paid him no mind and went straight to the competition area. I glanced at the scrolling names on the big screen. There were only 275 contestants left.

Yesterday, the goal was to narrow five hundred down to three hundred, but that didn't mean exactly three hundred would be kept. Only those who met the standard could stay.

Today was the round to narrow it down to fifty. Anyone who made it into the top fifty today would undoubtedly be a leader in the industry. For a global competition, a top-fifty ranking was a huge honor. Tomorrow, the final competition would be based on rankings. Even placing 20th would bring immense fame. Countless companies would be clamoring to hire you with exorbitant salaries—not just a million a year, but at least ten million.
