Rachel sounded completely drained. “Well, I’d say he’s absolutely obsessed. He’s already got so much money, why is he still hustling like crazy? Doesn’t he ever need a break? I heard he’s been making some big moves this past month, adding at least three major projects!”
“I don’t really get the stuff he works on, but I heard my boss mention one of the projects. He said that once it launches, it’s going to be a massive moneymaker. It's something like an integrated global sales platform where all goods, domestic and international, have to go through him. The project needs a ton of technical support and they haven’t even hired all the engineers yet, but he already has the entire process mapped out. He’s just waiting for the team to be assembled to go live. It’s scarily brilliant.”
“Steven must be a maniacal workaholic. How do his employees stand it? Even a workaholic like me is about to be tortured to death. It’s why I haven't had any time to see you and cheer you on. I hope someone comes along and sweeps him off his feet, turns him into a lovestruck fool who neglects his work. He has enough money to last several lifetimes. How high is he trying to climb? It’s just insane!”
I furrowed my brow. A global sales platform?
That sounded like Nebula, the project Steven didn't officially launch until he was thirty-one. But Steven was only twenty-eight right now!
Could it be that in my past life, Steven had already been preparing it for years before it went online?
Or perhaps…
My mind filled with doubt, but I didn't dare to dwell on it.
Rachel seemed to realize something. “Zephyra, did I say something wrong? Just pretend you didn't hear me. I'm just exhausted from work and was venting. He just happened to be the target of my rant, I didn't mean to specifically talk about him.”
I snapped out of my thoughts. “It’s fine, there’s no harm in hearing about it. But if you’re that tired from work, you should take some time off. Your boss won’t mind. He can’t work you to death, can he?”
Rachel laughed. “I know, I’ll take a few days off after your competition to grab dinner with you. Will Horace be able to visit you? Does he have time?”
“He should be here today, probably on an afternoon flight, so he’ll arrive tonight.” My eyes curved into crescents as I said softly, “Rachel, I can feel Horace’s sincerity more and more. Just like you said, his love is so obvious. I was just the one who always ignored it before.”
Rachel clicked her tongue, teasing me. “He's a great guy, and you're a great woman. I hope you two get your happy ending. I better be sitting at the head table at your wedding.”
We joked around for a bit. Rachel’s words comforted me, and I felt much better. I waited until the competition results were announced. When my phone lit up with the words “Congratulations, you’ve advanced,” my spirits soared to the heavens!
“Yes!”
All that was left was tomorrow’s final placement round!
I walked out with a spring in my step and immediately spotted him standing to the side, impeccably handsome and holding a bouquet of flowers—Horace!
Among everyone waiting to pick someone up, he was by far the most handsome. He wore a grey overcoat with a high-collared knit sweater underneath, looking elegant, refined, and utterly charming.
Stunned, I walked toward him with a delighted smile. “Horace! I thought you weren’t arriving until tonight! How are you here already? How long have you been waiting out here? Why didn’t you tell me?”
