He said it like he was sentencing me to death, his eyes screaming—you are so dead.
…
With the police’s help, I managed to escape with my suitcase.
I didn’t press assault charges against Steven. It would have been too complicated, and I needed to get away quickly. Bringing it to a criminal level would have entangled me in legal proceedings for a long time. And even though we were in Sonha, not Ixia, and Steven wasn't yet the top dog here, his connections were extensive. A slight delay and some of his twisted explanations might have trapped me again.
First, I messaged Rachel, explaining the situation, including what Verna had done to her father.
Rachel didn't reply.
I called Horace directly.
For some reason, he didn't pick up either. A knot of anxiety formed in my stomach. Was he angry with me?
I pursed my lips and sent him a message telling him where I was going.
Then, I dragged my suitcase straight to the hospital.
Verna had no reason to hate Rachel. Her attack on Rachel was clearly aimed at me.
After she went to all that trouble, how could I not pay her a visit?
I had seen her name in the news, so it was easy to find out which hospital she was in. What baffled me was that Verna was in a shared, standard room, the kind with another patient next to her. The other patient wasn't there at the moment, probably out for a walk.
Would Steven really let Verna share a room with someone else?
I was completely bewildered.
I pulled back the curtain around Verna’s bed. She was sitting up, reading a book. She was pretty and had an air of innocence. With the sunlight streaming in, she looked like a picture of serene beauty.
Verna looked up at me, surprised at first. Then her eyes darted to my legs, her expression shifting to one of shock, as if she couldn't believe I could walk normally. A sneer formed on her lips.
“Still alive and well, I see. What do you want?”
