Verna had probably never encountered a woman as ferocious as me, because for a moment, she forgot to fight back, merely shielding her face as I landed several blows before she finally started to struggle.
“Zephyra! Aren't you afraid of making Mr. Lancaster angry by fighting me? Don't forget, he has always protected me, and he has to protect me!”
I had to laugh. I could never be so brazen in front of the legal wife. I always thought I was bad for shamelessly chasing after Steven, but compared to Verna, she’s utterly shameless.
“I know, you're Steven’s savior, right? He often says how important you are to him. But holding that over his head makes you a pretty despicable person.”
“Steven is clueless, willingly letting himself be morally blackmailed and fighting others for your sake. He's an idiot, and you two really are a perfect match. But that won't stop me from teaching you a lesson. I don't care if Steven protects you or not. If you dare to hurt me, you'll have to face the consequences!”
“You actually think I'm Mr. Lancaster's savior?” Verna’s innocent, pretty face showed a flash of astonishment, and then, despite the red marks on her cheeks, she laughed. “It seems he didn’t say anything. He actually said nothing at all…”
Verna stared into my eyes, her gaze dark. “So there are things he’s afraid of. I thought he was fearless.”
Her words confused me. “You’re not Steven’s first love, the cliché savior? Then why would Steven have to protect you?”
Steven loved Verna, so of course he would protect her, but there was no “must” about it.
In my past life, I was his wife. He had a legal obligation to assist me, yet even that wasn't a mandatory duty for him.
So why was it a must for Verna? Who gave Steven that order?
Verna shook my hand off and sneered, “I’m not going to tell you. It would be best for you and Mr. Lancaster to stay in your own separate lanes.”
Fine, don't tell me. It wasn't that important anyway.
I looked at her. “You set a trap for Rachel’s father, causing him to lose that much. I want that money back, every last cent.”
Verna defiantly leaned back on the bed. Her leg was in a cast, rendering her temporarily immobile, but her tone was utterly indifferent.
“I have no money. I spent it all hiring people to set up your friend's father. Now all I have is my life. Take it if you want. Or you can ask Mr. Lancaster for the money. Mr. Lancaster and I are a unit. Just tell him I owe you, and he'll definitely pay it for me.”
Then, Verna looked up at me again. “Zephyra, let me remind you, admitting I went after your friend is an act of kindness on my part. After all, you have no proof that I was the one who ruined her father.”
“Her father brought most of it on himself. It was his greed that got him tricked. I didn't take a single cent from him. Everything was perfectly legal and above board. If I don't give you the money, there's nothing you can do about it.”
Interesting. That sounded exactly like something that bastard Steven would say.
I suspected either Steven taught her to do it, or she was just mimicking his style.
I narrowed my eyes, glanced down at her casted leg, and promptly sat right on top of it.
