I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 499

Thankfully, my life was short. I made it from the harsh winter to the spring, the season of rebirth, but I didn't last long enough to see the snow-laden branches sprout new green leaves before I died, devoid of all hope, just outside the emergency room.

I shot up in bed, suddenly awake. The pain from the final stages of my cancer felt as if it were etched into my bones, stabbing at me even now.

The room was pitch black. I turned on the light and glanced at the time. It was only a little after three in the morning.

I pressed a hand to my forehead and took a deep breath.

It was all Verna’s fault. She had filled my head with so much nonsense that it forced me to dredge up the past.

Her proprietary attitude today… just thinking about it still infuriated me.

I should have hit her harder. I wasn't in the wrong. The two of them, that cheating pair, were the ones in the wrong.

Saying I stole her life? As if she was worthy.

My phone had two missed calls, both from Linda. There were also text messages, lots of them.

Most were about the competition results.

Linda's voicemail was the most excited.

“Zephyra! You made it to the top ten, do you know that?! You’re in tenth place! The top three haven’t been decided yet, so the organizers are adding another round for the top ten. You have a thirty percent chance of making the top three! Oh my god, you’re amazing! If you get in the top three, your career will take off, Zephyra!”

My heart skipped a beat. I quickly scrolled through my texts, and sure enough, there was a message from the organizers. An incredulous smile spread across my face.

As I read the lines praising my work, all thoughts of Steven and Verna vanished from my mind.

These people would not break my resolve!

I clicked on Linda’s second voicemail. “Damn, how are you so good? I sincerely apologize for ever doubting you. Please, take me under your wing! I’m not asking for much, just making it into the top three hundred would be enough!”
