Steven’s expression was grim. “There’s nothing between us.”
I let out a contemptuous “oh,” my tone dripping with cold sarcasm.
“I know you and Verna are soulmates. She's the one person you can't bear to see hurt. Not a word, not a finger. Don’t worry, I always stick to the facts. As long as she doesn’t provoke me, I’ll be sure to tolerate her. If you’re really that scared of me bullying her, you can just give her the day off. That way, we won’t run into each other, and nothing will happen.”
Steven’s face seemed to darken even more. He narrowed his eyes and stared at me, looking as if he wanted to say something. I stared back, my eyes full of defiance, waiting to see what new excuse he’d come up with.
In the end, he looked like he’d swallowed a bitter pill and said nothing. He just started the car and drove me back to the Lopez estate.
Steven took my hand, intending to walk in with me, but I didn’t want him to see my grandfather. My phone was with Rachel, who had likely gone back to work today, which meant Ryan was probably holding onto it.
So, I reached for Steven’s phone to call Ryan, but Steven’s brow furrowed in displeasure. “You won’t let me meet your family?”
I said flatly, “My grandfather holds a grudge. After the scene you pulled yesterday, you embarrassed the entire Lopez family. He doesn’t want to see you.”
Steven shot me a cold look. “Is that so.”
I took his phone. “I can’t help it if you don’t believe me. I’m just getting my phone. Let’s not make a big deal out of it.”
He wore a sour expression. “Zephyra, you just know I won’t say no to you.”
I raised an eyebrow at him.
He didn't insist on going inside, so it seemed he had given in. I wasn't sure why he had become so accommodating. Maybe even a crocodile sheds a few real tears.
Ryan was thrilled when he answered my call and said he’d bring my phone right out.
As Steven and I waited, I was surprised to see not only Ryan approaching, but Horace as well.
My expression changed, my heart instantly clenching. I watched from a distance as Horace, dressed in a white shirt and glasses that gave him a scholarly, handsome look, walked toward me. He looked tired, with faint dark circles under his eyes, as if he’d been up all night.
How could I be so stupid? Horace was so persistent. Of course he wouldn’t have just left today when he’d said he would wait for me.
Fine. If I was choosing revenge, I couldn't drag him down with me. It was best to make things clear today.
Steven glanced down at me and said slowly, “Since you’ve given me a chance, isn’t it time you drew a line with Horace?”
