Horace stared at me in disbelief, his beautiful eyes turning red.
“If your story isn’t over, then what are we?”
My heart twisted in pain. I looked down. “I’m sorry.”
I felt an immense guilt toward Horace. I already owed him so much, and now I was adding to an emotional debt that felt impossible to repay.
But I wasn't smart or powerful enough to take on a natural-born business titan like Steven. He was too strong, with his family's legacy and the advantage of being reborn. I could only resort to underhanded tactics to bring him down.
Before that, I needed to gain his trust. And to do that, I had to draw a line with Horace.
Ryan was dumbfounded. “Zephyra, have you forgotten what you used to say? You said that even if Steven knelt before you, you would never forget how you suffered. Have you forgotten how he treated you? And that mistress! You can’t build a life with him!”
Just as I was about to speak, an arm wrapped forcefully around my waist, pulling me into an embrace.
Steven looked down at me. “There is no other woman. Only Zephyra.”
Ryan glared at him. “Cut the crap! I remember perfectly well how lovey-dovey you were with Verna! You must have done something to Zephyra to make her change her mind. Did you threaten her? Don’t be afraid! With Grandpa backing us, Steven can’t do anything to us! It’s not like he can bankrupt the Lopez family!”
Steven shot him a look. I frowned. “Ryan, I told you, he didn't threaten me. This doesn't concern you, so stay out of it. Go back inside.”
Ryan’s face scrunched up. “Zephyra!”
Horace was calm. He suddenly took my hand and looked at the back of it, where only Steven’s wedding ring sat. The gentle warmth that always graced his face finally shattered, replaced by a cold, hard mask.
“The ring I gave you, did you throw it away?”
His hand was unusually cold, sending a shiver through me. I clenched my fists.
