I was stunned again. He seemed to be studying my expression as he explained slowly, his voice hoarse.
"The truth is, my relationship with my parents isn't good. They only have eyes for Thomas. Besides work, we have nothing to talk about... I was desperate for their approval, so as long as they didn't cross a line, I would tolerate their behavior."
"I also didn't understand my own feelings back then. I didn't hold you in my heart or consider things from your perspective... I'm sorry, Zephyra."
My expression felt a bit stiff.
In two lifetimes, this was the first time I had ever heard such a detailed explanation from Steven. He'd always been a closed book, the type to suffer in silence rather than reveal what was on his mind. But today, he had explained why he never defended me to his parents and had even sincerely apologized.
To be honest, the Zephyra of my past life desperately needed this apology from him. She would have settled for even a single word of understanding.
But it was all too little, too late.
Still, I was surprised that Steven was capable of self-reflection.
It made me a little uncomfortable. I didn't want him to become a better person; he was supposed to stay the villain.
"You didn't like me, so it's normal you didn't think of my feelings. Besides forcing me to drink fertility soups, Mrs. Lancaster's cruelty was all verbal and attitudinal. She never laid a hand on me. The friction between us never reached a breaking point, so it would have been hard for you to intervene. I don't blame you."
He stared at me for a long time, his lips pressed into a thin line, before finally unbuckling my seatbelt for me.
"You won't have to see her anymore. Out of sight, out of mind."
We got out of the car.
Antonia was standing by the car, not daring to rush us but staring intently at my lips. She seemed to breathe a sigh of relief only after confirming my lipstick wasn't smudged.
Steven didn't even glance at her, simply taking my hand and leading me inside.
Antonia stomped her foot in frustration.
At the dinner table, I deliberately sat Antonia next to Steven, whispering, "Play to his tastes. Don't just be a suck-up."
Antonia scoffed, determined to regain some dignity.
"I don't need you to tell me what to do. I have my own methods!"
Just then, Steven walked over and took his seat.
Antonia sat down as well, intentionally pulling down the collar of her dress to reveal a large expanse of her pretty shoulders and impressive curves. She looked at Steven with sultry eyes.
"Stev, the food looks amazing tonight. Is it all to welcome me?"
Steven's handsome brow furrowed as he shot her a cold glance.
