Beneath Steven’s cold, detached exterior was a storm of fury he couldn’t unleash. Faced with his rage, my own anger instantly evaporated. I swallowed hard, completely terrified.
Now I knew why I wanted to divorce him.
Damn it, he was a psycho! His mood could flip on a dime. I was scared to death!
His grip on my chin was bruising. My complicated emotions dissolved into a feeling of pure grievance. I clawed at his hand, beating at his chest.
“That hurts! Let go of me!” My eyes turned red. The fear and tension I’d been holding in since yesterday finally broke, and tears streamed down my face. “Why are you bullying me? It’s not my fault I have amnesia! Who would want to wake up not knowing anything?!”
“I don’t have any family to protect me, and you’re the only person I know. Even if we had a bad past, we were married once! I trusted you… but you don’t care that I barely survived, you won’t even help with my medical bills, and on top of that, you lied to me! Now you’re hurting me and blaming me! You’re… you’re horrible!”
Steven’s heart seemed to lurch, and in the next second, he released me.
I sat up straight and continued to sob. His handsome face was rigid with frustration. “Stop crying!”
“I’ll cry if I want to! What’s it to you? You’re just my ex-husband, what’s so special about that? If you won’t help, then don’t! Why are you yelling?” I was truly heartbroken. The village chief told me yesterday that even though I didn’t remember anything, my husband would come for me. He said I wasn’t alone, that someone would help me through this and maybe even help me regain my memory. I had waited for him with such hope, but the reality was the complete opposite of what I’d imagined. Instead of a husband, I got an enemy.
“Go away! I don’t want to see you! I’ll just have the village chief find my next great love. If I was willing to leave you for him, he must be rich too! I don’t need you, you cheap bastard! No wonder I wanted a divorce. You’re a penny-pinching miser! You’re awful, hmph!”
That last part came out as a furious glare.
Steven’s mood plummeted to rock bottom. “Say that again!”
His words hung in the air, but before I could react, a knock sounded at the door.
Gordon cleared his throat, regretting his hasty knock as he looked at Steven.
“Mr. Lancaster, your attending physician would like to speak with you.”
Steven’s cold gaze swept over me before he turned and left. As he passed Gordon, he muttered grimly, “Put a complete media blackout on this.”
