My heart hammered against my ribs. Steven held both my hands down by my sides as I looked up at him cautiously, growing even more afraid when I saw his cold, deep eyes.
"But… last night, I didn't roll over to your side."
I thought I had been a restless sleeper, rolling into his arms and touching him all night, which was why I had tried to back away in a panic. But I had already been on the very edge of the bed… so, he must have been the one to move closer.
I hadn't tried to seduce him.
Steven was silent.
The air was dead quiet for a few seconds.
Seeing his face darken, I offered a placating smile.
Honestly, while Steven wasn't a terrifying monster, he was definitely intimidating. Feeling guilty, I didn't dare push my luck and quickly made an excuse for him. "We've probably been sleeping separately for a long time, so you're used to being alone. Having me here must have felt a bit crowded, and that's why you held me. I don't mind! Really!"
"We were married before, anyway, so no harm done, haha. So… did you sleep well? I hope I didn't snore or anything and keep you up, right?"
A moment later, Steven kicked me out of the room again.
This time, it was clear he was furious out of embarrassment.
I stood outside the door and sighed. Steven was impossibly hard to please. It felt like everything I said made him angry.
I scurried back to my room, threw on a jacket, and rushed downstairs to ask the innkeeper to deal with the rats.
The owner was shocked and incredibly apologetic. She immediately went out to buy rat poison and insecticide, even insisting on treating me to breakfast. With barely any money to my name, I was more than happy to accept a free meal.
As I ate, I saw David typing on his laptop. He was dressed formally today, looking like he was heading somewhere important.
