I was taken aback. “Why would you say that?”

She looked me straight in the eye. “I know you. Since the divorce, if you had really been determined to leave him, you would have found a way. But you never did. That tells me you still have feelings for him deep down.”

I remained silent, which was an answer in itself.

Even though I’d always claimed to hate him, the truth was I was just too scared to admit how I really felt, so I buried it deep inside.

“I remember that guy who was chasing you back in school,” Rachel continued. “You couldn’t stand him. You were so desperate to get away you almost moved to another country, remember?”

I nodded. I did remember. His family ended up sending him abroad, so I didn't have to transfer, but not before I had a massive fight with my parents about it.

“I never understood your attitude toward Steven before,” Rachel said. “But I get it now. Since you do love him, maybe it’s time to seriously consider giving him another chance.”

I was stunned. “You don’t hate him anymore? I thought you despised him. Why are you pushing us together?”

She gave me a serious look. “I was prejudiced against him, and I hated him because of what happened with Horace. But after this, I realized something. You are you, and I am me. I can’t force my feelings on you.”

“Hating him is my problem. You being with him won’t change our friendship.”
