Chapter 298 Gradually Eased

The video call connected quickly.

Benjamin and Amelia sat together, looking at the screen.

William was holding Nina.

Before the call came, William had been telling Nina a story.

“Mommy.” Seeing Amelia on the screen, Nina sat up a little.

Amelia immediately noticed Nina’s puffy, red-rimmed eyes.

Her heart clenched. “What’s wrong with Nina?”

William sighed and explained what had happened the day before.

He said, “She’s really scared of not being able to see me now, so she wants me to hold her constantly.

“I’m also worried she might be traumatized.”

Nina sniffled, looking much more subdued and listless than usual.

Amelia’s heart ached for her.

She steered away from the heavy topic of life and death, trying to distract Nina. “Nina, your daddy bought you a ride-on excavator today. We can drive it together later, okay?”

Nina nodded. “Okay.”

Hearing about the excavator lifted Nina’s spirits a little.

Benjamin, watching his red-eyed daughter, didn’t say much during the call. But after hanging

he had one of his assistants clear his schedule for the next day.

up,

He said, “Amelia, I’m going to see Nina tomorrow.”

William was returning the day after tomorrow. Benjamin decided to go tomorrow and come back with them.

Amelia nodded emphatically. “Okay.”

After a moment, she remembered to ask, “Are you free tomorrow?”

He pulled Amelia into a hug and comforted her, “Don’t worry too much. I’ll head over first thing in the morning.”

Benjamin’s executive force was never in doubt.

True to his word, he was at the airport early the next morning.

While he was on his way to the Bennett House, Nina was still glued to William.

William said, “Nina, I am right here. I won’t disappear.

“Why don’t you go play with the other kids? They came to find you.”

Seeing Nina trailing behind him, William was touched, but rationally, he wanted to ease her fears.

To help her feel better, he encouraged her to play with the children who had come over.

The kids visiting today were the same older kids she had played with yesterday.

They hadn’t come empty-handed.

One of the boys had even brought Nina some berries.

He said, “Nina, come on. I’ll take you to catch loaches.”

Then he walked over, took Nina’s little hand, and tried to lead her away to play.

Nina let herself be pulled along but kept looking back at William every few steps.

She said, “Grandpa.”

William said, “I’m here.”

“Grandpa,” she said again.

William replied, “Okay. I know. I won’t die.”

After countless reassurances from William yesterday and today, Nina finally felt a little more at

ease.

She reminded him in her tiny voice, “No die.”

After this final reminder, Nina went off with the older kids.

One of them asked, “Nina, what’s wrong today? Why are you sticking so close to your grandpa?”

“I scared,” Nina said.

Her words confused the other children.

A girl asked, “Why are you scared?”

“Nina scared Grandpa die,” Nina said.

Even though Nina got mad at William sometimes, deep down, she adored him.

The thought of never seeing him again was too much.

A boy said, “Nina, you don’t need to be scared. Your grandpa doesn’t look like he’s gonna die.”

Another boy echoed, “Yeah, your grandpa is still young.”

In his fifties, William was considered quite young in the village.

Others his age were still working hard in the fields.

Coaxed by the older kids, Nina’s anxiety gradually eased.

A smile finally reappeared on her face.

“Noah come?” Nina asked, seeing her playmates and remembering Noah, who had no one to play with.

A boy said, “Sure, you mean Gabriel’s grandson, right? Go call him.”

The older kids didn’t know Noah well.
