The hillside was overgrown with weeds. While playing up there, Nina took a tumble.

But it was okay; the older kids had her smiling again before her cries could really get going.

The children ran wild in the open field. This was even more fun for Nina than her favorite playground.

Between gathering things and playing, time flew by without anyone noticing.

The kids started a fire and began preparing their picnic.

Nina wanted to roast the mushrooms she’d picked.

The more knowledgeable kids stopped her. “Nina, no, you can’t. Those really colorful ones are poisonous. You can’t eat them-you’d die.”

Hearing the word “die,” Nina hurriedly threw the mushrooms away. “Nina no die.”

Once rid of the mushrooms, Nina obediently sat by the fire. She took a small stick and poked at the flames, copying the older kids.

She was having a blast playing with the fire.

Seeing her so happy, the older kids couldn’t help but smile, too.

“Nina, is it fun here in our countryside?” a girl asked.

“Fun.” Nina giggled, thinking this place was the best.

While the group of kids was having a great time, their adults were worried sick, especially

Nina’s.

The moment William realized Nina was missing, he immediately guessed she’d been taken by those kids.

He slapped his forehead, filled with regret.

William said, “Nina hates staying home. I should have known that when the other kids left, she wouldn’t just let them go.”

So Nina has managed to join them.

William was frantic. The other adults, seeing that their kids had taken Nina, quickly joined the search.

But for some reason, they just couldn’t find them.

“Where on earth did those kids go?” a man asked.

At first, in their panic, the adults swore they’d give their kids a good spanking when they got back.

But as the search dragged on and evening approached, their anger faded.

Now they had only one thought: just let the kids come back safe.

The adults were running in anxious circles. The kids, who had finished their picnic long ago, weren’t staying away on purpose.

They were lost.

That Backridge Slope was connected to other hillsides.

The

group

had wandered off while playing and lost their bearings.

Since they’d always been forbidden by their parents to come here, they weren’t very familiar with the area.

Once lost, they panicked, too. Nina, holding an older kid’s hand, trudged along.

Nina couldn’t walk much further, but the older kids couldn’t carry her either.

The whole group looked pitiful and lost.

Nina wasn’t giggling anymore.

She’d already cried several times.

“Feet hurt,” she said.

A boy said, “Nina, hold on a little longer. We’ll be home soon.”

“Want Grandpa.” Nina pulled her chubby little hand free and wiped her tears.

She missed her grandpa, and she was really hungry too.

The picnic from hours ago hadn’t been enough.

Nina wasn’t full.

Just as Nina was tired and hungry, as if a little jinx had settled on her, she fell into a round pit hidden by wild grass.

Luckily, the pit wasn’t very deep, so Nina wasn’t hurt in the fall.

Once she tumbled in, the older kids tried to pull her out, but they had no rope.

Nina sat in the dark, dirty pit, wailing in fear.

She cried down in the hole, and a few of the older kids, unable to hold it together any longer, cried up above.

In the dark of night, the sound of children crying wasn’t just pitiful anymore.

It was downright eerie.

Just as Nina was crying so hard she started to gag, Benjamin finally found them.

Benjamin had heard Nina’s cries from a distance.

He ran over, flashlight in hand, and its beam found the grimy Nina in the pit.
